• copy/paste from vnc into Linux terminal

From Avon@21:1/101 to All on Friday, August 20, 2021 14:23:46
    Hey there

I have VNC running on a headless windows box that I access from a vnc client
    on another windows box.

If I copy and paste text from the remote system to my local windows box
things work fine and the text comes across and vise versa

But if I fire up on my local box a VNC connection to the x11-vnc server
running on my linux box and then run a terminal to access my bbs (now running on this new linux box) and try to paste any text into the Mystic message
editor running in that terminal I can't get the text to paste.

    Any thoughts as to how.

I tried ctrl-shift-v but that didn't work either.

    ....

in a related question when I look at the text in my linux terminal while running a local mystic login and reading a message ... how do I select and copy/paste any of the text I see in the messages I am reading.

It worked in Windows but not in Linux :(

I can't actually paste to a terminal over VNC either. I suspect its VNC getting in the middle somehow but I have never really looked into it. You can get the contextual menu up for paste in the terminal window but now cigar.

I can paste on the local machine directly connected though, which is why I suspect VNC. Don't have a solution though.. I usually just end up using a telnet/ssh session direct to the headless box. I'm really only running VNC to support VirtualBox

This might has to do with the VNC client and/or VNC server or some configuration.

I tried ctrl-shift-v but that didn't work either.

I tried from KRDC (Linux) to RealVNC server (Raspbian Linux) and Ctrl-Shift-C and -V works in both directions.

Which terminal do you use? Does copy/paste work in other (GUI) programs? What about right mouse click for context menu?

Ctrl-Shift-C should work too in Linux.

In the linux shell, are you running something like syncterm or netrunner? or
is the telnet connection to the BBS through a raw bash shell? if so, is the shell setup for ANSI? also something you might want to make sure is installed is the ncursers library on the linux system. its a library that allows you to use a mouse outside of xorg...

    Thanks

I've since found if I copy from windows client and connect to x11vnc server on linux box then run a text editor I can paste text just fine.

Also if I open up a terminal on the linux box I can use the center button on
my mouse to paste the text into the terminal

But, if I run a ./mystic -l and then call up the message editor I can't get text to paste into that, whereas with the windows equivalent I could.

    I wonder if it's a Mystic thing?

Can anyone paste text from a remote system into a Linux Mystic terminal
    running the message editor?

I am opening a terminal on the linux box and running a local login using ./mystic -l

Oh ok, interesting... what desktop are you running on the linux system? i am assuming something such as Gnome on a laptop or desktop ---> going to a RPi with rasberian that runs mystic? Ok so i just launched a bash shell on my slackware 15 laptop and did an ssh to my BBS box. i launched mystic with the same command you used: ./mystic -l (for the local login). i then wrote up a test text in GVIM and then copy and pasted the text from GVIM >> into the
bash shell that had ./mystic -l running. it successfully pasted. i then sent the netmail to you. you might need to log into my BBS to check it out
though... so i at least w have proof that it does work at least on the systme
    i am running....
    hope this helps :-)

    Thanks

It's all good thanks for having a look for me anyways :)

Yeah it's got me stumped. But I'm not that familiar with all things Linux so learning as a I go. A good thing.
