• Northern Realms Down

From Warpslide@21:1/101 to All on Monday, May 24, 2021 03:34:21
    Hi All,

Just a quick FYI that Northern Realms may be down for the day.

The NUC that the BBS runs on seems to be misbehaving. Not sure where the problem is as of yet, it was working this morning and now it's showing "No operating system found". I took the SSD out and the contents are still
there, but it just doesn't want to boot. The backup ran ok overnight, so nothing would have been lost anyway.

Worse comes to worse I'll fire Mystic back up on the Pi while I investigate more.

Ugh Warp, that stinks. If the SSD is working fine I think the /var/log directory might be helpful for review.

Let us know what the gremlin was - I hate when a system craps out on us. Bleck!!

So I think the NUC's motherboard may be on the fritz. The SSD seems to be
ok, but the NUC itself refuses to boot to anything at all, no USB sticks,
mSATA SSD or SATA SSD, not even a USB CD-ROM. It just refused to boot to anything.

No biggie though, I just fired Mystic up on my Pi and have mail up & going, just means I'll go back to customizing this one instead of Telegard.

I hadn't though to check that. This NUC uses something that looks like a laptop power supply. I'll have to dust off my old volt meter and give it a look. The power supply says it should be providing 19V @ 3.42A.

WHAAAAAT!? You never thought that the wall-wart might be
defective? I've encountered several over the years that
either simply overheated (showing signs of burning, especially
if they had white plastic) or just quit.

Hey, the machine is powering on and appears to be working ok except for that it's not booting. The power adapter isn't hot to the touch or anything like that. My volt meter isn't where I thought it was, so I'll need to go hunting for it.

It may be in one of those boxes we didn't unpack from the last house. If that's the case it's probably just easier to buy another one from Amazon...

Depends.... you may be able to do one of two things... so long as you can figure out the actually battery type, you can probably charge it with an appropriate charger.

If the hot side of the charger has failed, you may be able to power the low voltage side with an alternate power sipply.

Soon as I have time I'm going to open it up and have a look. Failing that
I'm hoping there is a knock off charger on amazon that will do it. Found
a laptop battery for my wife's dell there for like $60 CAD where the dell one was double that.

OK here is a couple trouble shooting steps:
    Will it boot to bios?
If it's a INTEL NUC here a trouble shooting page:
    https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/topics/wizard-nuc.html
Other common problems is memory, try swapping memory around if your using 2 sticks or stick one at a time in and see if it boots.

I'm the opposite. I'd rather operate an electric device and
avoid all the extra maintenance and smell that a gas-powered
    machine requires.

Case in point, I have an electric weed wacker - took a little
getting used to manipulating the cord for it, but I like being
able to just release the trigger and not hear the motor all the

I have an electric mower too - same circumstances - a chord
that needs to be managed. But again, I like being able to just
release the grip and not have to deal with the motor noise all

Both of the above are fine for close proximity trim/cut in most

Electric powered gardening tools are only good it you intend to work on a

Still, a pair of horses beat mechanical lawn mowers any day. This saturday I got drunk after a BBQ and ended up asleep in the barn cuddling up with a horse. Try that with a mechanical lawn mower :-)

You can always replace the transformer/rectifier part of the charger, unless
    it is something very sophisticated.

Usually you can find spare charges for sale, sometimes used on eFlea (eBay)

I agree. I got tired of the noise and smell of the gas mower, along with
the maintenance just to get it to start. I pulled my last mower cord
several years ago when I bought a battery operated mower. It works great
and on one charge I can mow both my front and back lawns. Never going
    back to gas.

Case in point, I have an electric weed wacker - took a little
getting used to manipulating the cord for it, but I like being
able to just release the trigger and not hear the motor all the

Our weed wacker is battery operated too. I need to buy a second battery
because that one is not always enough to finish both front and back.
But, it charges fast like the mower battery.

I have an electric mower too - same circumstances - a chord
that needs to be managed. But again, I like being able to just
release the grip and not have to deal with the motor noise all
    the time.

I used to have an electric mower that was operated by a cord. I didn't
like the cord management - I wasn't that sophisticated with it and it
seemed to get in the way, but that house had a much smaller lawn than I
have now, so it was doable. I switched back to a gas mower after that,
but like I said, a few years ago moved to the battery operated kind.

We have a battery powered weed wacker, leaf blower and a manual lawn
mower. (THe old old school one that is just powered by human muscle).
The weed wacker works great, the leaf blower (if the charger hadn't
given up) worked okay, and of course other then sharpening the blades
every decade or so the lawn mower has no maintance.

I actually had that happen to me at a party, withy the exception I was not drunk. I don't drink with people because I know how badly alcohol affects me.

What I thought when that happened to me was "My neck is kiling me, I have fallen asleep in such a bad position."

    Glad to satisfy your curiosity.

My parties are alcohol-less, actually. At least 99% of them.

Also the only atendants are white male programers and engineers, who are more interested in achieving the perfect speedrun for the videogame of the week than snatching a girl. So yeah there are usually no girls.

Oh, now I think about it, we once had girls in one of our parties, and somebody dared bring alcohol too.

I had the memory of finding one of the few beds available late at night. Some of the girls asked me if I wanted to share the bed with her. I told her:

"This bed is **mine**, you go look for another one."

Actually I am just a selfish sociopath who wanted the bed all for himself :-P This one was the
equivalent of a gold digger, trying to see if sher could warm my heart (and other things) enough to
lend her a place in the last remaining bed, but if you think she was offering proper payment for
that piece of bed, you are mistaken.

Nothing wrong with that.... The missus here tends to sleep around... all four corners of the bed... I tend to end up with a thin strip down one edge... until I get fed up and give her the get back on your own side.

Horses can sleep standing on, but they need a minimum time per day laying too. I don't think I have caught any of mine laying for more than 30 minutes, though, and laying for long periods of time can be dangerous for their health.

They also organize "guard turns" so there is always a horse standing if the others are taking a nap down, unless they think the area is safe. This sucks because if I am working around, they may decide it is my turn for standing guard :-)

I knew that extended periods of laying down was a problem. Why
is that? Are they crushing their ribcage or restricting
    circulation, or something?

They also organize "guard turns" ...

That I did not know. I think cattle do something similar. Cows
also tend to assign babysitters amongst the other adult females
when the little ones are laying down for a rest.

You got it right. It crushes their ribcage and therefore may cause lung problems. This is one of
the reasons why equine surgery has to be done fast. You can't have the horse on the surgery table
for more than 2 or 3 hours.

    "Why?"
