So I can't find anything about software limits trying to deal with JAM bases, but I suspect....
Having created the JAM bases and gotten a rescan, some of those bases were holding over 14000 messages. This seems to exceed what The Reader can deal with. I noticed this after the USEnet install of it was coping quite nicely but it contains but a fraction of the volume.
FEutils JAM utilities appear to be quite poor. Unless I'm wrong, despite being able to pack and purge it doesn't appear to be able to renumber them which according to its help only works on HUDSON. Merely reducing the number of messages doesn't fix the problem. On the face of it, the index numbering appears to exceed the readers limit. When it does it bleeds into other areas indexing also. ie, the highwater mark on the oversized bases also affects the highwater on other JAM bases, marking them all read. Read until you exit, and then it just starts again from unread.
As it stands this morning, I'm seeing a "normal" new message reaction in my GEN and BOT bases. It does leave me a problem going forward, I know the limit is somewhere between 6000 and 14000 messages, thats a nice range. But I don't know wher exactly. I also need to find some more complete JAM base utilities, allowing at least for renumbering as well as pack/purge.
