I'd like to start a weekly podcast or YouTube video series on BBSes and their accompanying technology, I'm not sure which.

A podcast would be a lot easier to manage, but not as widely accessed, I
    think.

A video series would be a bit harder to manage and produce, but would
probably be consumed by a lot more people. It would also be a richer experience, since I'd be able to do video interviews, and show off the BBSes and mods/games/tech/art groups.

What do you all think? I'd love to get feedback in here, and I'm going to put
a voting question on my BBS for anyone that'd like to vote on it.

    Lemme know!

Neither medium is really useful to me, but if I had to choose, I'd suggest the video series. I think it would have better penetration.

What would you talk about, exactly? BBS's are now a niche technology,
ancient and obsolete to most. I'd be more inclined to do something on Retro Comms (Yes, you can even use that title) and talk about more then home run bulletin boards, these could include the BT Viewdata service Prestel
(Including various providers like MicroNet 800, etc., French
Minitel, CompUServe, AOL, CeeFax and ORACLE teletext services, X25, Frame relay, ATM. LAN technologies such as token ring, ARCnet, the first ethernet using coax and terminators, Acorn/BBC Micro Econet, etc. This would give you
a much wider audience and maybe have a "BBS Section" in each podcast or
video if that's what you're also wanting to do.

    But I'm not...

I think the most helpful thing I found was Mystic Guy on Youtube (Hosted by Avon), Specifically they way he did the video... Most of his videos he says what he is doing, so it also to some degree became not just a video but also
a podcast. (Just minimise the video once started and follow along)

Though Mystic Guy's main focus was showing how to setup the BBS not quite the same as showing off all the mods/games/etc. or video interviews.

Hope my opinion for videos helps.

    Take Care,

Yep, I contributed to his channel as well, specifically the lightbars video. That was mine. =)

I think either or really... as you say the videos will likely get more uptake but in the end it all depends on content and pod casts are a growing thing so don't be put off with the idea of an audio only.project.

I'd also toyed with similar ideas but have not done anything (yet)... and the thing is whatever you take on it's the sort of thing you are going to want to have to try and sustain and from personal experience that's easier said than done. I *still* have a bunch of updates to do to Mystic videos which are on
my TODO list and honestly it comes down to available time to commit to such things and the motivation to do so when juggling whatever else is demanding your focus / competing to your spare time :)

I think it is a great idea, a lot is going on in this medium a lot of old software is being resurrected, games are starting to be popular again, echos
on the right networks are popular. The Commodore 64 world is ablaze with new BBS software AND hardware, Image BBS is currently being updated to 3.0 (My business partner and I) CNet 64 and Amiga are being updated. There is the Ultimate 64 which is a FPGA board which is pretty much the same as the
original only better! I run a Board on a U64. I think it is a great idea, I
am finding myself watching YouTube more and more each day..

I'd listen/watch. If it's more of a discussion than a demonstration, then I'd suggest a podcast (easier to subscribe/listen while mobile).

Everyone's different. My verbal memory is less effective than visual, and if it's done right, you could always strip the video out for mobile use as a podcast. :)

TL;DR - yes, a great idea, and I personally would prefer audio podcast.

Longer - my #1 primary way of listening to 'stuff' is via podcast. I
usually listen while driving to/from work, while working, exercising,
doing hobby stuff, etc. My wife doesn't care for the 'noise,' so I
don't listen when I'm around her, unless she's in a 'less than talkative'
mood and I pop in an ear bud.

I don't consume much video stuff, just bedause it's impossible to do that while driving/working/etc. But an audio podcast can go anywhere.

What could be read as 'odd' is I'm a singer/songwriter and I don't listen
to 'the radio' unless it's oldies stuff. :-)

That's an interesting take on it! I know I listen to one called "The Retro Hour" and enjoy that. They are mostly talking video games, but I love their voices and they have an excitement about them that's infectious!

They have interviews of 'movers and shakers' in that niche area. Could have interviews with sysops?

Yes - this... I am not trying to sound discouraging, but I actually ran
a podcast for a while - dropped off for a long time - started it back up
but have had TWO episodes in about 14 months... But if you're doing it for
fun and personal satisfaction, then the schedule or rate of release is
    not at all important!!! :-)
