Actually, in medieval times, geese were used as guards,
because they can be very aggressive, so I'm not surprised.

Guinea hens are good substitutes. They squawk and cackle at the
slightest thing they think is unusual. We got rid of them after
    one year.

A goose adopted my Aunt Ann when she had a farm in
Alberta. If anyone tried to get close to her the goose
would chase them away. The goose at least backed off when
Ann said "Goose! It's okay". She never trained it or fed
it nor understood why goose chose to protect her. I don't
remember how many years it lived that way but it was
enough that most of the family had an encounter with it.

I had a goose on the farm just like that. Maybe she accepted me
because I took care of her brood and fed them. I have a picture
of her chasing a cousin of mine who came to visit. I'll have to
see if I can find the photo (that was in the days of film
    camera) and share it.

Laugh, they are mean but loyal to those they decide to protect.

Yes.. that was my recommendation, to use it as a kind of shield
just in case the bird gets closer. The goose seemed to know
that its best opportunity to advance was when you turned your
    back to it.
