I went to my local thrift store and found a Dell Inspiron 3847 for $150. 16
GB of RAM, i7 chip running at 3.6 ghz, 3TB drive, for $150USD. While not normally an impulse shopper, this caught my eye, and it wouldn't last long there, so I picked it up.

It's a nice upgrade from my 10 year-old Precision T3400, but there's a definite difference between new consumer-class and older business-class machines. My T3400 has a huge power supply, lots of power connectors, and
came pre-populated with 4 drive cages. The whole thing comes apart without screws.

The new one has 1 extra bay, no additional power cables, a 300w power supply and no drive cages. No worries, though.

Looks like an off-lease system, but the drive only shows 150 days of use.

My next task is to find a better video card. I swapped my old AMD Radeon HD 8750 card into it, would like to find something under $150 that'll do some mild gaming.

I spent the evening moving data over to it and trying to make sense of my cloud sharing. I had Office documents on my desktop being shared to Google Drive and duplicate Google Docs versions I'd converted, and a bunch of
movies shared in Drive. I ended up deleting close to 100 GB in the cloud and
5 GB of crap pictures on the HD.

That's a nice deal... I doubt I'd ever see such a thing here in NZ... but to
be fair I don't usually look that hard :)

At the moment I'm day dreaming about owning an older 1990s style reel to reel tape recorder.. I used to use a studio quality one made by Otari but now they seem to only come up for sale priced at over $1000 :(

My dad has a 4 channel reel to reel, It's from tge 70's or 80's though. I remember us recording a song he wrote once on it. Just me and him, but it sounded like a full on Big Band ensemble when finished.

Yep that sounds very familiar to me. When I was at university I was involved with the campus radio station they had a production room with a multi channel mixing desk, a two track and four track tape recorders... it was a lot of fun.
