I share your sense of some music sounding all the same. For me,
it's in the female pop category. All the young female singers
emote a whiny squeeky edgey voice. It's pathetic. Even the
younger male singers: Beber, Jonas, etc.. sing with a airy
breathy pining sound as if they need to go for crap real bad.
Not sure what categories you listen too, but some of my favorite tunes/singers are these (and their sound is distinctive and
different between them all).

Won't let me listen without an account. F'dat...
I listen to pretty much anything from Classical to Skrillex,
Disco to Die Antwoord, in general I hate remixes or songs
that are based off of the best part of an older song that's
been sampled and the kids today think the new artist is such
a genius.. if they were they'd write and play their own
songs instead of singing it once and lip-syncing it forever.
a good example of a punk-ish remake (in my opinion) of a
somewhat cheesy disco tune..

True,. Without an account, you only get a 30 sec sample. But
you can get a "free" account. It's quite benign. They only
interject the odd 10 second commercial every half hour or so of
listening. It's a great way to research for songs, and find new
ones even in the free version.
It allows for "offline" play too. I'm thinking of
recommissioning an older laptop with Spotify so that I can
"grab" some collections for local play, and then take the laptop
Many people think that Cindy Lauper's Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
is an original, but it too is just a new interpretation, and
probably arguably a better one too.

Yes.. that's pretty good! It makes for pretty good party or
backround music for housework. Punk is not my preference at the
moment. I'm into some of the dramatic works of Two Steps From
Hell.
As you.. my music interests are quite eclectic too. I don't
care for rap though. Although, I have a soft spot for Coolio's
Gangsta's Paradise.. I really like that one. I like the chorus
and the dramatic choral treatment that kicks in at about :50
into the song.

A good example is "Hey You" by Insist.. a Japanese Rap group. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1s0WVPUwW6w
If you like Metal more.. check out this great artist Leo Moracchioli from Norway who looks like he's having too much fun.
Eye of Tiger (Metal Cover) - he plays most of the instruments, records and mixes himself as directs most of the videos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6r1dAire0Y&list=PLEEX8g2XtzsGv61U11HpoWt5 JP18NHeve&index=4
Leo doesn't do lead on this song but other videos show he could have.
I got so caught up in rewatching some of his remakes I took
an hour longer to finish this message... lol
I'm encouraged to check out a few more. The one fellow is
obviously very talented on multiple intruments. The "ad" at the end
of the video was hilarious.

The drummer with the "glass eye" (or contacts) is an entertainer
for sure!
TIP: When posting YT links, you can always snag the shorter
version instead of the one that your browser indicates in the
address field byt just clicking on the YT's SHARE button and
"copy" that one. For instance, the shorter versions for the two
above links are:
Another thing I've learned.. is if you add a dot after a YT
link, the commercials that they place at the beginning of a
video won't play!
Yep, just add a dot, or period.

Pretty cool. And proof that a good song, is just a good
song no matter what.
