• Blocked ports

From Sparky@21:1/192 to All on Saturday, January 23, 2021 13:50:50
OK, this is for you network geeks out there. Since I have set up my BBS
(which is on it's own computer) I have been accessing it via the computer I normally use with Netrunner. First I was just using the IP address of the computer it is on and later after I setup No-IP using commconnbbs.net
(port23). Starting about a week ago I could not access my BBS with Netrunner anymore. I checked with a online port checker and it is saying port 23 is closed. My router still has port 23 forwarded to the BBS computer. According
to comcast they don't block port 23. Any suggestions as to how to hunt this down?
    Jeff

I guess I start out by pinging the port from within your home LAN... I'd also check that your BBS hasn't auto blocked the IP that you are trying to connect from.

It turns out that when I was using Block IP as an event it was adding a rule
to the WIN 10 firewall that was blocking ALL incoming ports. I deleted the
rule and stopped using the Block IP event and everything has been fine since. Jeff

Try changing it to port 2323 or something. It it works, port 23 is blocked somewhere else. If it doesn't work, it's most likely your router.

Also, check the firewall in the computer you are running the BBS on. Maybe you patched Windows recently and the upgrade changed something.

You can't ping a port, but you can try to telnet to it with a standard telnet client (telnet 1.2.3.4 port_number).
