The Cyberpope (Bishop of ROM) is back online from rainy Richmond(Vancouver), BC, Canada. . .

HTMLing in via a local BBS that's been around for the better part of a millennium(the 3rd) & no small part of another(the 2nd)

Soon, hopefuly, to have my own point set up.

I have friends in NZ, where I understand this net is centred. . .

Am I welcome & is there anyone around in 2021?

I was known the world over(Fidomnet & dozens of dial-up BBSes) as Cyberpope
up until Y2K scared everyone into buting ew computers, which came with free
AOL & Compuserve CDs, & they discovered internet porn & BBSing died a sudden
    & painful death. . :'( (I'm still missing it)

I'm old (obvi), in my 2nd half century (recently begun)

I work PT from home doing admin assistance with the occasional bit of CEO-
type contract negotiations for a company that provides on-the-ground
assistance to insured, & other, trtavelkers needing medical/etc. help.

I'm married with Children (yup, think Al Bundy, but without the shoe thing or football history); my kids live here; one is 31 & the other is 12, although,
a times it's tough to figure out which is which for age!

I also invest much time & effort into supporting my community through volunteering for various social network non-profits.

During posdt-Marcgh 2020 lockdown I've been finding local resources to help those most affected by covid (the poor, elderly, &/or disabled)

I'm pretty much all 3, but no complaints. . .

I can play 72o & win as easily as AA. Yes, life is a giant game of Texas Holdem! Or suchlike. . . it is a game, maybe more an MMRPG or MUD?

Write back, say hi, tell me about you!

Cool. I realise I am on a roll of short responses so this one is deliberately longer. heh.

yes and yes. I'm pretty sure there are others about. They can chime in as and when they want. :)

    Welcome from Ontario, Canada!

Similar to you I ran a dial-up board back in the late 90's, but I certainly wasn't known the world over... ;)

The pandemic somehow got me interested in BBSing again & decided to see if they still existed. Sure enough, they do!

I didn't run a board (only assisted a few sysops here & there)

Mostly I was Mr. Chatty, providing messages in the local groups & on Fidonet, Familynet, & 1 or 2 others I don't recall the names for.

I dialed into boards all over N.America (had an excellent LD plan ($30 flat rate for unlimited N.American calling, so I gusranteed I got my money's worth with 6,000+ minutes a month, split between calling BBSes & talking to my sweethearts.

Voice calling is limited, for me, to practical & to girls (not now that I'm married, of course - very little of either now)

Which board did you run? I called a couple in Toronto, & one outside of, somewhere.

I used to live in Nipigon for one winter(Sep-Jan, 1983) (that cured me & now
I stay out here in the tropics of Canada (Florida & Hawaii both have had more snow than me this winter!)

I tried to find what I missed from BBSing on the internet itself, but nothing that had the community I enjoyed. . .

& the forums didn't have the option of personally addressing or being
addressed as these do. . . as I recall the ones addressed to me will show up top in my QWK packets. . .

What's that mean, a local authority? I know the Brits have Authorities & Councils which, I assume are groups of bureaucracies under an elected government (civic, district(county?), provincial?)

Yeah, I missed BBSing after the crash of the late 90s. I persisted with my system until around 2001, because I still had my own Usenet and email feed, but the advent of cable broadband was the final death knell for my point (that outlived the boss).

Yes, as well as cities changing over time. I stayed in Melbourne for 19 years.
It was the right thing to move there in 1991, and the right thing to leave in 2010.

I grew up in a town (<50k) that became a city in my late preteens.

I grew up in towns of 4000 and 2500 respectively. They wre a lot bigger now and home to mainly city commuters.

It's what they call exurbia now. I'm in a suburb of the big city(Vancouver) now, it has a quarter million people, but still a
farming community feel. (like my hometown)

Hmm, one of the criteria for our move was to go outside the range of most city commuters. I'm now in a regional city of a lottle over 100k. Everything's much more compact, and we have most of the services of the big cities locally. :)

Hmm, 74 is a long way past "recently begun" ;) And the stats on lifespan can be misleading. Some stats on autistic lifespan say that on average, I should either be dead or not far off it, but those stats include causes such as suicide (unlikely with my good state of mental health), filicide (already passed that risk factor), and a few others not relevant to me.

Not that I'm planning on dying -- I'm going to live forever, or die trying! (so far, so good; this is the oldest I've ever bee!)

Yes, but not in such a way that could result in kids by accident, and other avenues (e.g. adoption) were rules out, because I'd have issues raising kids.

Thanks, mate! :) There comes a point that the lures that attract the young to the big cities wears thin, eh?

Yes, as well as cities changing over time. I stayed in Melbourne for 19 years.
It was the right thing to move there in 1991, and the right thing to
    leave
    in 2010.

    Gotcha!

I grew up in a town (<50k) that became a city in my late preteens.

I grew up in towns of 4000 and 2500 respectively. They wre a lot bigger
    now
and home to mainly city commuters.

I lived in a town of 2,500 once, & that cured me -- the interconnectedness of everyone is scary. & I'd've been an outsider until 6 generations minimum.

It's what they call exurbia now. I'm in a suburb of the big city(Vancouver) now, it has a quarter million people, but still a farming community feel. (like my hometown)

Hmm, one of the criteria for our move was to go outside the range of most city commuters. I'm now in a regional city of a lottle over 100k. Everything's much more compact, and we have most of the services of the
    big
    cities locally. :)

Exactly why I like my sub-burp of Vancouver. Most of what I need is right
here, but if I need greater amenities, I'm only a short trip to them.

Our top universities & hospitals are in Vancouver, but we have both here in Richmond, too.

I can get to Vancouver downtown(say for a job), by wheelchair & transit in under an hour in ideal conditions (each bus reasonably on time, no weather affecting the trip, God willing, & the creek don't rise. . .)

I, of course, plan a 2.5 hour trip so when unfortunate occurrences happen(& they do), I'm still early. I like to relax with coffee & newspaper before starting my day.

I can get 75% of my needs right next door in the strip mall (grocery,
pharmacy, restaurants, dollar store, pet store, produce, butcher, bank, doctors, dentist, lab) & online for the rest.

To shop for clothing, we head into the shopping part of Richmond (7 minute
bus ride) & visit the two indoor malls.

My job is 100% virtual, so no moreneed to commute (loving it! -- Was not fond of 4 hours/day unpaid time with my 12-hour shift, so I helped convert our company, 100%, to virtual; anyone can do their job anywhere, even in deepest jungle, far from a cellular tower or line of sight radio.

Technically, I could do my exact job on the international space station, as could all our staff. . .

    Join the club (I'm 52). :)

    Purty close. . .

I'm turning 74 on my birthday on the 20th, though. A sort of reset to brijng my physiology in line with recent studies that evidence that a major disability(e.g. hemiparalysis) significantly lowers lifespan.

Hmm, 74 is a long way past "recently begun" ;) And the stats on lifespan can be misleading. Some stats on autistic lifespan say that on average, I should either be dead or not far off it, but those stats include causes
    such
as suicide (unlikely with my good state of mental health), filicide
    (already
passed that risk factor), and a few others not relevant to me.

I told you my calenar age first up, at 53. . . (turniong 54, but I've chosen
to be 74r instead on the 20th, so my boy feels as it should & matching age)

My genes seem mostly okay -- might have lots of annoying health issues, but with proper care, don't have to die too early.

Not that I'm planning on dying -- I'm going to live forever, or die trying! (so far, so good; this is the oldest I've ever bee!)

    ROFLMAO!!! Same here, coincidentally. ;)

    Nice!

I'm currently not working (long story, won't go into here, but it's rather complicated). But that gives me time to do other things, I am still
    rather
    busy. :)

Choosing to do/accept doing "other things" is but a pipe dream to
    most!

Much of my life is now out of the box. :)

No kids here, never went down that track.

    Married?

Yes, but not in such a way that could result in kids by accident, and
    other
avenues (e.g. adoption) were rules out, because I'd have issues raising kids.

You mentioned Autism? I'm on t he spectrum myself (what they use to call Asperger's, as are my wife, & both kids!); loads of fun, as you can well imagine! Is it only you? I'm guessing you're in thye Asperger's range, too?

My dad was a volunteer firefighter for 30 years or so, in my
    hometown.

Cool, my dad was a volunteer too, until about the time I was born.

You're only as old as you feel, so I'm 82 most days.

Oh dear, I usually feel more like 25. ;)

I have days like that -- more so now hat I have CPAP working & allowing me a full sleep every night!

It just seems to be the more popular of the track & field sports for pros & ams alike. . .

I had a neighbour, 73, won his age division Iron Man at age 60! Ran them yearly.

You mentioned competing -- I didn't know there was competitive sprint/etc. beyond school/college stuff

Oh right, we have the provincial & natoinal seniors sports -- I was on the communications team for the provincials here in my city a while back.

I'm not into sports neither as participant or spectator. I only helped out because I was asked to by the mayor.

My city is quite full (under 6% vacancy rate) but city hall is committed to presertving rental stick & ringing in new, including "affordable housing" (to rent & to buy)

Off-shore realty manipulation caused our purchase prices to more than triple
in only a handful of years. A family home now can be over $3M.

3 hours out, my childhood home was bought for $22,500 in 1972, sold for $60k
    in '90, & is now priced at $500K & it's a dream home, for a larger family
(6BR, corner lot with slow road across the top & a semi-private connector
road going around the side & bottom, full enclosed gartage, full finished basement, "view"(described as such, but ever impressed me, since I could be
on top of the local mountain under an hour & get the best view)

Here it would cost over $20M. . . & likely become some kind of private institution.

If I had the f unds, I have my eye on a nice 3BR one-floor townhouse. (just around te corner, in country measurements)

Our top universities & hospitals are in Vancouver, but we have both here in Richmond, too.

We have a good hospital with world class medical technology here. It's a new hospital, built only a few years ago. While we have a local

which is a campus of one of the major Melbourne university, but many
    people
do study in Melbourne, with the greater selection of universities there.

Same. We have the Technion University here & the two major univerdities in Vancouver (24-minute train ride from downtown to downtown)

They have direct(express) bus links to both universities from here in
    Richmond.

did that myself (but lived just under half as far out back then).

I took some courses at my local uni, & loved it as the I had a bus outside my door that dropped me a block from the uni at 06h30, so I'd go into the
library to read/.study & drink my coffee until class tiime & it would be a silent peaceful morning. Couple regulars on the bus, with whom I just exchanged minimum pleasanties (we all enjoyed the express bus in, with quietness); if I go back, it'd probably be a two-bus trip, & just to get my first 2 years of a degree cheaper, then one bus, one train to the uni
    downtown.

Same bus (now removed) would get me to a block from work by 07h00 (08h00
start) to hit McD's for coffee & eggs.

I can get to Vancouver downtown(say for a job), by wheelchair &
    transit
in under an hour in ideal conditions (each bus reasonably on time, no weather affecting the trip, God willing, & the creek don't rise. . .)

It's possible to reach Melbourne in under 2 hours by train, and actually
    the
service is more comfortable than travelling from the suburbs. The express train takes about 85 minutes to make the trip.

We don't have anything like that; our equivalent about 5 hours out, requires
a car to commute. You can drive to my old home town, & catch the commuter train there, for a 45 minute pleasant clickety-clack in. Or drive the entire way (if leave 30 minutes before the rush, you get smooth empty highway all
    the way)

My job is 100% virtual, so no moreneed to commute (loving it! -- Was not fond of 4 hours/day unpaid time with my 12-hour shift, so I
    helped
convert our company, 100%, to virtual; anyone can do their job anywhere, even in deepest jungle, far from a cellular tower or line
    of

I onve worked in a virtual office, with 4 staff spread over 3 sites in 2 countries.

We have about the same, & open to others, a they come i (used to have a
copule in Europe & one in China, but we've consolidated to just Canada &
Mexico for now for scheduled staff.)

I told you my calenar age first up, at 53. . . (turniong 54, but I've chosen to be 74r instead on the 20th, so my boy feels as it should & matching age)

Haha OK. Yeah I'm more the opposite. I can pick something in my 20s or 30s.

That'd be your high levels of physical activity &, I'm sure, alongside
    healthy eating & sleeping choices?

My family's batting average is in the mid 80s, and that's without the benefit of my fitness - they were/are generally healthy and moderately active, but not like I am.

You should be ahead of the curve, I'd think. My family is late '70s to late '80s, & I'm relying almost only on technology & prayer to hopefully maintain the average.

You mentioned Autism? I'm on t he spectrum myself (what they use to call Asperger's, as are my wife, & both kids!); loads of fun, as you can well imagine! Is it only you? I'm guessing you're in thye Asperger's range, too?

I've adapted well enough over the years, because it's been in my family so
long (my theory) that we've developed the means to raise the boys so they overcome the worst of ASD, & get all the intellectual benefits with only
minor social issues (polished up by bullies, in my case.)

I have days like that -- more so now hat I have CPAP working &
    allowing
me a full sleep every night!

I'm not sure I could cope with CPAP - tactile and auditory sensitivities would be a problem.

I had to try several types of machines & masks to get this one, that works great for me. No cost, of course.

Yeah different strokes for different folkes. :)

My city is quite full (under 6% vacancy rate) but city hall is
committed to presertving rental stick & ringing in new, including "affordable housing" (to rent & to buy)

6%? That's a huge vacancy rate here. Rental vacancies are said to be consistently around 1% here. buying is also tight, definitely a sellers market, with houses offered for sale often selling within days (sometimes hours) at the asking price.

Off-shore realty manipulation caused our purchase prices to more than triple in only a handful of years. A family home now can be over $3M.

Depending on the suburb out here, prices can vary from around $250k to $500k+ for a reasonable sized house. Melbourne it can be in excess of $1M.

3 hours out, my childhood home was bought for $22,500 in 1972, sold for $60k in '90, & is now priced at $500K & it's a dream home, for a larger family (6BR, corner lot with slow road across the top & a semi-private connector road going around the side & bottom, full enclosed gartage,

My parents bought their house for $22k, added some rooms shortly afterwards, and sold it in 2005 for $420k IIRC. And I wouldn't be surprised if it's worth double that or more now.

Here it would cost over $20M. . . & likely become some kind of private institution.

    Ouch!

If I had the f unds, I have my eye on a nice 3BR one-floor townhouse. (just around te corner, in country measurements)

We're trying to get a house built. Have secured the land, waiting to hear about finance for the house part.

Same. We have the Technion University here & the two major
univerdities in Vancouver (24-minute train ride from downtown to
    downtown)

    Nice. :)

They have direct(express) bus links to both universities from here in Richmond.

Direct buses seem to be a novelty here. Bus routes, especially in Melbourne are notorious for taking circuitous routes. :/

did that myself (but lived just under half as far out back then).

I took some courses at my local uni, & loved it as the I had a bus
outside my door that dropped me a block from the uni at 06h30, so I'd
go into the library to read/.study & drink my coffee until class tiime
& it would be a silent peaceful morning. Couple regulars on the bus,
with whom I just exchanged minimum pleasanties (we all enjoyed the
express bus in, with quietness); if I go back, it'd probably be a
two-bus trip, & just to get my first 2 years of a degree cheaper, then
one bus, one train to the uni downtown.

If I was to go back, I would try and study at the local campus - 10-15 minutes drive and plenty of parking. Public transport would take an hour or so, because of low frequency and wait times. Studying in Melbourne would be much harder.

We don't have anything like that; our equivalent about 5 hours out, requires a car to commute. You can drive to my old home town, & catch
the commuter train there, for a 45 minute pleasant clickety-clack in.
Or drive the entire way (if leave 30 minutes before the rush, you get smooth empty highway all the way)

The regional train system is pretty good, except in hot weather (>36C), where they introduce speed restrictions for savety.

We have about the same, & open to others, a they come i (used to have a copule in Europe & one in China, but we've consolidated to just Canada
& Mexico for now for scheduled staff.)

Yeah it does work, with some thought to setting things up.

Haha OK. Yeah I'm more the opposite. I can pick something in my 20s or 30s.

That'd be your high levels of physical activity &, I'm sure, alongside healthy eating & sleeping choices?

    Yep! :)

My family's batting average is in the mid 80s, and that's without the benefit of my fitness - they were/are generally healthy and moderately active, but not like I am.

You should be ahead of the curve, I'd think. My family is late '70s to late '80s, & I'm relying almost only on technology & prayer to
    hopefully maintain the average.

Yeah, I haven't had any significant intervention from the medical system during my lifetime. Just mostly routine stuff and minor illnesses.

I've adapted well enough over the years, because it's been in my family
so long (my theory) that we've developed the means to raise the boys so they overcome the worst of ASD, & get all the intellectual benefits
with only minor social issues (polished up by bullies, in my case.)

Yeah, while it's in my family, I'm a bit of a uniquely affected case, so their normal methods didn't work as well with me. What saved me was my own (considerable) capabilities.

I had to try several types of machines & masks to get this one, that
works great for me. No cost, of course.

    Cool. :)

Why is it not part of these umbrella categories?

Probably because it's not simply walking, running, throwing or jumping (triathlons have cycling and swimming as well). From Wikipedia:

"World Athletics, the sport's governing body, defines athletics in six disciplines: track and field, road running, race walking, cross country running, mountain running, and trail running.[19] Mountain running was added in 2003 and trail running was added in 2015.[20]"

    Ref: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sport_of_athletics

Or you mean a formal "Athletics"? Because it would seem to be such, &
    even a sport (for competitive)

Triathlon is definitely a sport, but comes under a different umbrella.

It just seems to be the more popular of the track & field sports for pros & ams alike. . .

think you've got some wires crossed.

Probably just ignorance, but I'm happy to learn/understand.

And here's the entry for triathlons. Notice the very different world governing bodies.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triathlon

Look up Masters Athletics. It's for us old farts. ;)

Okay. . . we have stuff in Canada & internationally, too, I just wasn't that aware of, or familiar with, it.

Yeah, Masters Athletics is global, administered by World Masters Athletics (WMA).

Everything is canceled here, too. If deemed non-essential.

Here, it depends on the COV ID situation at the time. Just going into a 5 day snap lockdown in around 6 hours time, to try and head off a potential outbreak of the UK strain.

Last March all that was open were medical, groceries, booze, & weed stores.

Yeah, we'll be down to food, pharmacies and other essential services for the next 5 days. And it goes without saying that my weekend's sport has been cancelled. What happens after mid next week, depends on the results of mass testing in that period.

I'm more a participant these days, don't actually watch a lot of sport. :)

I don't see many participants being spectators, too, must be extra frustrating to watch when not doing, eh? Besides seeing how you'd do something differently. ..

I'll spectate in an opportunistic manner (i.e. in between, before or after my events. :)

Was in 2005, and 4 months later, met my current partner.

Yeah same here. No marriage is perfect, but with a bit of work, it can be "very good". :)

6%? That's a huge vacancy rate here. Rental vacancies are said to be consistently around 1% here. buying is also tight, definitely a sellers market, with houses offered for sale often selling within days (sometimes hours) at the asking price.

Where I live is going to always be tight - it's a popular settling place & we're an island, so no room t groew outwardly & the federal restrictions governing anywhere with an international airport precludes building up significantly.

Depending on the suburb out here, prices can vary from around $250k to $500k+ for a reasonable sized house. Melbourne it can be in excess of
    $1M.

Wow, look at that: the Canadian & Aussie dollars are nearly equal right now (last I looked, ours was noticeably bigger)

3 hours out, my childhood home was bought for $22,500 in 1972, sold

Here, there's increasing demand from the tree changers, which has increased further since COVID-19, with people less inclined to stay in the big cities and realising working from home is now an option that's likely to persist after the pandemic.

There's talk of making wheelchair accessibility mandatory for new houses. I don't have a problem with that, at the build stage, the extra cost is likely to be a fraction of what it would be after the fact.

Yeah other than a few long routes around Melbourne (with a fancy name), this doesn't happen. Local bus routes are mostly better, but lack frequency here. My goto by next year will be ebike, if I have my way.

Turns out I have a lot of mental processing capacity - appears to be immeasurably by conventional means, as the attempts to measure processing speed actually show limitations in sensory perception or fine motor control, rather than information processing itself. A bit like a gaming rig connected by a 300 baud modem LOL.

Here, it depends on the COV ID situation at the time. Just going into a 5 day snap lockdown in around 6 hours time, to try and head off a potential outbreak of the UK strain.

We're in a lockdown now, for second wave & the UK strain. . .

Day 1, we are looking likely to avoid a third wave, which this time, would be the UK strain. Contact tracing proved to be sufficient to stop the earlier strains over Christmas, but they're a lot more concerned about the UK strain and are being more aggressive.

Good luck to you; you ca still practice, on your own, though so long as you do so at more than 2m from other people?

Not at the track, because (1) it's closed , by order of the city, and (2) it's more than 5k from here, but there's several footy ovals and soccer pitches that I can use closer to home. I also have a 2 hour time limit, but that can be handled with good management.

Wee're allowed an hour/day out of the house for exercise, maintaiing social distancing, natch.

We get 2 hours/day, solo or with household members or no more than one other.

That was the nice thing about living in San Francisco - with water on 3
sides and a county line to the south, there wasn't Sprawl.

They are certainly building UP, though - the downtown area has some massive high-rises that are changing the skyline pretty significantly.

One of them is built on old landfill from the gold rush in 1849, they broke
up and scuttled the ships people sailed in on and filled it in with rubble from construction. The Millenium Tower, a 58-story condominium skyscraper is the tallest building in the city - at least for the time being.

The building is both sinking and tilting, because of the landfill it was
built on and the nearby escavation for a transit terminal handling several
bus lines, Amtrak and others. Lawsuits and pointing fingers ensued, and it sounds like the transit authorities negotiated a "not my fault" clause, meaning the SF taxpayers are going to foot the bill for massive pilings to
be installed and to settle lawsuits by condo owners.

Yeah other than a few long routes around Melbourne (with a fancy name),
    this
doesn't happen. Local bus routes are mostly better, but lack frequency here. My goto by next year will be ebike, if I have my way.

What would you go back to school for?

Good question, and unless done purely for intellectual curiosity,

is a gamble for me, because my ability to utilise it in the worlforce is uncertain. :/

Why so? Maybe find something related to your work & get your boss to pay or subsidize the costs?

The regional train system is pretty good, except in hot weather (>36C), where they introduce speed restrictions for savety.

    How does that equate?

The heat affecting the lines, so they say.

You've definitely seen more of hospitals than I have, though I have spent

lot of time visiting terminally ill people close to me.

I've had my share of those. Good friend w/stage 4 brain cancer went downhill during covid restrictions, so only his wife could visit.

Turns out I have a lot of mental processing capacity - appears to be immeasurably by conventional means, as the attempts to measure processing speed actually show limitations in sensory perception or fine motor
    control,
rather than information processing itself. A bit like a gaming rig connected by a 300 baud modem LOL.

Ouch! I was fortunate, after my aneurysm, as I ha extra brain power prior, so with a knock-down, I'm still well above average in capability, just not in speed. Nobody's waarer I've had damage, outside my mobility, but I know -- I used to be able to multiply random 3-digit numbers by random 2-digit ones in
my head; now it's a struggle sometimes to do xx*xx!

    But could be worse. 98% who've had a brain aneurysm burst are dead & buried;
I only lost left side of body & some processing power. I'm winning!

That was the nice thing about living in San Francisco - with water on 3 sides and a county line to the south, there wasn't Sprawl.

They are certainly building UP, though - the downtown area has some
    massive
high-rises that are changing the skyline pretty significantly.

One of them is built on old landfill from the gold rush in 1849, they
    broke
up and scuttled the ships people sailed in on and filled it in with rubble from construction. The Millenium Tower, a 58-story condominium skyscraper
    is
the tallest building in the city - at least for the time being.

We built up an old landfill inVancouver for Expo'86; including hauling away much toxic waste. Now it's a richie rich condo area. Part of it is occasionally used for the Molson Indy 500 event whenit cycles through.

The building is both sinking and tilting, because of the landfill it was built on and the nearby escavation for a transit terminal handling several bus lines, Amtrak and others. Lawsuits and pointing fingers ensued, and it sounds like the transit authorities negotiated a "not my fault" clause, meaning the SF taxpayers are going to foot the bill for massive pilings to be installed and to settle lawsuits by condo owners.

There's alwayssomething to make the lawyers money. Wioth usit was builder buyilding condos using an outdated building code that hadn't been updated to cover big buildings in a damp climate, so Leaky Condo Syndrome was a money maker for lawyers for a while, now just for the contractors who come in to
fix them. ($1-$3M for a big multi-unit building)

... There are secrets within lies, answers within riddles.

    Riddles are fun:
Q: What has a neck, but no head?
    A: A shirt.

Q: What can you catch, but not throw?
A: Your breath (or a cold)

Q: What has 13 hearts, but no other organs?
    A: A deck of cards

Q: What has a bottom at the top?
    A: Your legs

Well, the odds of me being able to use any qualification I get for work is very low (so far, hasn't eventuated). That's because of some issues I have, that make it extremely hard to capitalise on any qualifications I get.

Yeah, I'm not as good in that sort of thing, but I have incredibly fast recognition, and I can statistically analyse huge amounts of data in real time or near real time. One area this has been very consistently handy has been in the field of radio direction finding (foxhunting). I have been known to accurate locate a hidden transmitter from several miles away using a directional antenna and standard receiver in a moving car. The signal strength variations are correlated with antenna bearing, along with vehicle speed, local elevation and environment. I can then add topographic data, either from reading a map or literally from memory in my head, if I know the area well. One quirk of mine is that on VHF, reflections rarely confuse me, they actually add more data that I can incorporate.

Years ago, on a UHF CB foxhunt, where only stock, unmodified radios were allowed (so that non technical people had a chance), one of the other guys jokingly said that my brain should be declared ïllegal equipment", because it was obviously non standard LOL. And back then, I only had an inkling of what I'm capable of.

Union dropped a bomb out of the plane. "Why did you do that?" Asked the president of America. "I did it for good luck" replied the president of the Soviet Union. They then landed at the conference and they all got into a car. They then saw a little girl crying. "Why are you crying?" they asked. "A
penny fell from the sky and hit my eye!" She cried. They said sorry, and then the three leaders drove on. They then drove for another 5 minutes, and they
saw another girl crying. "Why are you crying?" They asked. "A loonie fell
from the sky and hit me in the eye!" She screamed. The three of them said
they were sorry and they drove on. Five minutes later, they came across a
boy, and he was laughing his head off. "Why are you laughing?" They asked. "I farted and my house blew up!"

Haha I was being a bit crude. :D Here, a lot of NZ coins creep into our cash, as some of them look similar to the equivalent Australian coin. :)

NZ coins worth less? Our coins are at par, unrolled, but go far enough from
the border & they'll refuse our $1 & $2, not knowing how to trade them in for USD value.

We had a similar disparity in our favour in 2019 for a few months. Screwed up my wife''s eBay sales for a bit. Now with the dollar the other way, she just dropped "ship to USA"

There was a period in the early 2010s, when online overseas shopping was great for us. :)

Nice. International hereis brutal; I just avoid it. I sent a postcard just
to USA (nextdoor country, land border); it cost double what a first class letter in Canada costs, & only goes second class(no return)

When our $ was significantly larger, I tried to get booksellers to
    stop
charhing the CAD (higher) printed value, as it was only so to make up for lower CAD--obviously not an issue at that time. Most complied; only the minwage slaves didn't, for lack of authority & autonomy.
    Now
it's back with USD noticeably higher. My job does business internationally, getting paid only in USD. (We're also incorporated
    in
    the US)

Yeah, I onc was paid in USD for a job I did online for an American friend. It was sorting out a Linux server he was deploying for a company over
    there.
I got both bonuses - paid in USD (worth more) and no GST to be taken out.
    :)

Sweet! Got to get yourself more of those, eh?

"Why do you always exchange your Canadian dollars to USD? It makes no sense!" "Well neither does the Canadian Mint!" [We no longer make pennies(cents)]

Yeah smallest coin here is 5c.

Same here now. Suits me just fine. But now I don't get to put 2 pennies down as a tip for bad service ("putting my two cents in" to state my negative opinion)

    Fun in-person pun:
    Canadian royal porn money:
Take one Cdn $2 coin, with obverse facing other person & say, "The queen with" then flip the coin to show the reverse & continue, "the bear, behind."

Hmm, that could be, err, taken a few ways. ;)

    That's the idea. . . :D

I'm a tree changer, escaping the city, and getting much warmer summers as

    result. :)

Not here -- going inland gets colder & colder (my parents were 9 hours

Yeah I'll pass on that too. ;) We're more likely to get 2 or 3 weeks of 35C+ in January. :)

Very inconsistent here -- mostly rainy & dreary, but occasional snows & storms. . :P (that's the northern Pacific for you)

    Haha OK. :)

Well, NZD is usually worth less than AUD.

Yeah it's still not too bad here. :)

with rubble from construction. The Millenium Tower, a 58-story
condominium skyscraper is the tallest building in the city - at least
    for the time being.

I'm a few hundred messages behind, but I didn't see an immediate response to this, but...

The tallest building in The City is the Salesforce tower.

Looking at Wikipedia, the Millenium Tower was the tallest building
constructed in The City in the 2000s, and is number 6 in height overall. But that still makes it 129 meters shorter than the Salesforce tower.

But, "has tilted up to 2 inches a year and has sunk as much as 3 inches per year" certainly puts it in its own category, as you talked about.

You are correct. I must have been thinking about when the Millenium Tower
was built - I was working in SOMA at the time, a couple of blocks away.

The Salesforce tower certainly is imposing; it seems you can't get a skyline shot or a San Francisco city shot without it in the background.

Thst's the other traditonial statement of bad service: a 5c in the bottom of your coffee cup (i.e. she's only getting 5c & she has to fish through your spit/backwash to get it; I reserve that for serious problems, as it should cause much soulsearching & shame, possibly leading to her quitting.
Definitely leading to my never retrurning, of course.)

Seems plausible. I can only assume there were tons of things extolling its various virtues, and entirely ignoring things like the Transamerica building (tallest until the Salesforce tower went up), which was built in 1972.

At this point, the only things I really know about the Millenium Tower is
that Willie Brown lives there and that whole sinking and tilting thing. I couldn't even tell you which of the tall buildings it is.

The Salesforce tower certainly is imposing; it seems you can't get a skyline shot or a San Francisco city shot without it in the background.

Yeah. And there's a _lot_ of controversy about how attractive of a building
    it is.

(I'm probably more on the side of "it's decent" than "it's kinda ugly", but I don't really have a strong opinion on the matter.)

I am trying to run mutil to add files, and file groups.
I tried restarting. I also ensured all other bases are enterable, they are
but I have a problem (I think I missed something in the config, and this
    could be as well....I hope)
