Are there any message areas outside of fsxnet you enjoy chatting on? I have enjoyed DOVEnet quite a bit, but I'm wondering which other spots might be
    worth checking out.

This is not a helpful answer, but I find that I oftentimes struggle to keep
up with FSXnet, and adding more just seems like a way to have me spend too
much time on BBS messaging areas. :)

I'm occasionally tempted to add them anyway, because that is part of being a sysop, I think. :)

Anyway, do report back anyway, if you find things, as I think it's still an interesting topic.

I poke around several other general topic message areas in
Fidonet, Araknet, Micronet and Dovenet. I see common users
    across some of those.

Micronet just celebrated it 20th year:

    ;S The Micronet Information Network(TM)
    ;S Created on 1 September 2000

It has a handful of echos:

    MIN_BBS BBS Support/Help/Discussion
    MIN_CHAT General Micronet Network Chatter
    MIN_COMP Computer Support/Help/Discussion
    MIN_DEBATE Friendly Debate (18+ please)
MIN_GENAN General Announcements (New files, etc.) [READ ONLY TO USERS] MIN_HAM Amateur (Ham) Radio Chat
    MIN_TEST "Test" Message Area
    MIN_WEATHER General Weather-related Discussion

And, a couple more gaming-related echos.

Ironically, human echomail activity has dropped since the grand
milestone date of Sep 1 2020, (actually the summer months Jul/
Aug/Sep were particularly dead) ..but things started to pick up
    in Oct.

You may find Micronet a fine place to add to your ventures.

    HTH.

I can only imagine what it was like back when 600 to 1200 baud was the best you could expect while waiting for messages to load. Then again, I get the feeling that active users might have been closer to the hundreds or single didget thousands on any given day.

I like the V4> quote name. That's a nice touch given there's that other user, Velkia or some shit, and I have similar shortened names.

Haven't had as many opporunities to check the boards as often, but I will keep this in mind the next time I am trolling different echos.

Yeah. I suppose I don't remember ever posting to Fidonet, but posted to local BBS forums fairly frequently.

And those were probably pretty reasonable. Since you might have 30 regular callers for a 1-line BBS, and probably only 15 people who'd post to message bases with any regularity.

Which makes for a manageable size group to get to know, and manageable sized message bases.

I would imagine what you would do is have a couple of local BBSs in your area you could post to regularly that could maintain their own file download areas, and those sysops might occasionally dial into a long distance data link, get some stuff you couldn't get locally. That or you had the advantage of people who were willing to eat their own long distance charges calling your BBS and uploading cool shit.

Using the systems now I still can't quite picture the feeling or vibe of being there when it was the cutting edge.

I had 2 Fidonet echos I posted too pretty much daily, and a few others on occasion. There was even one RPG echo I played in for a while. That was diffucult, because you coukd have a week or more between actions, depending where everyone was and hiw routing went.

Local BBS message areas were pretty active around here. Some by necessity. a few boards had message posting requirements tied to File and door access.

Which makes for a manageable size group to get to know, and manageable sized message bases.

The biggest differences I notice are that we used to get together as a group regularly, so you could put a face to an alias on the BBS.

There were local discussion areas where people who lived near you could talk about local issues. These became important during the gulf war protests in
San Francisco. It was our Twitter of the day.

When you were into BBSes and the early internet, you walked around in public feeling like you knew about a whole other world that the rest of the people around you hadn't any idea of. It almost felt like a secret society.

I suppose that's how I was introduced to the demo scene.

I don't really know how the various files spread, though BBSs with CD-ROMs
were a thing by the time I started calling.

I was never hugely into _files_, either, but I did have a decent assortment
    of music mods for download.

Using the systems now I still can't quite picture the feeling or vibe of being there when it was the cutting edge.

Yeah. I guess I'm not sure if BBSs were cutting edge back when I called them. Maybe with RIPscrip? And I guess there was enough money in it for there to be plenty of advertising in BBS-specific magazines.

I guess it was kind of a nerdy pursuit, since I don't recall meeting anyone
in school and then hanging out with them online. It was always the opposite direction, of meeting other kids the next town over (still the same local calling area), and occasionally winding up meeting some of them.

If you were in the right country there was a lot of Phreaking going on too.
I used to get the odd callers out of Germany who could reliably rort the DeutscheTelekom system. They'd sit for a while and upload stuff.

It also used to be pretty "spiffy" to be a courier so long as you had a bleeding edge speed modem, and could either phreak, use a corporate phone,
and afford the bills, you could be a minor deity...
