Are there any message areas outside of fsxnet you enjoy chatting on? I have enjoyed DOVEnet quite a bit, but I'm wondering which other spots might be worth checking out.

This is not a helpful answer, but I find that I oftentimes struggle to keep up with FSXnet, and adding more just seems like a way to have me spend too much time on BBS messaging areas. :)

I poke around several other general topic message areas in
Fidonet, Araknet, Micronet and Dovenet. I see common users
across some of those.

I can only imagine what it was like back when 600 to 1200 baud was the best you could expect while waiting for messages to load. Then again, I get the feeling that active users might have been closer to the hundreds or single didget thousands on any given day.

Yeah. I suppose I don't remember ever posting to Fidonet, but posted to local BBS forums fairly frequently.
And those were probably pretty reasonable. Since you might have 30 regular callers for a 1-line BBS, and probably only 15 people who'd post to message bases with any regularity.
Which makes for a manageable size group to get to know, and manageable sized message bases.

Using the systems now I still can't quite picture the feeling or vibe
of being there when it was the cutting edge.
I would imagine what you would do is have a couple of local BBSs in your area you could post to regularly that could maintain their own file download areas, and those sysops might occasionally dial into a long distance data link, get some stuff you couldn't get locally. That or you
