• Dialup option for your BBS

From Avon@21:1/101 to All on Wednesday, November 18, 2020 15:17:58
    Hey team

Nu will be able to speak to this better than I but there's a nice chap on Reddit who is offering some BBS a chance to have their Internet based systems connected to service that links them to a bunch of (mostly) USA based phone numbers.

Callers can use a modem to dial up your BBS, then pass this system a
name/login which in turn links the modem to your Internet based Telnet etc. server.

The hardware he's using can be found here - https://bit.ly/3kInvel

The thread explaining how it's set up is here - https://bit.ly/32Qn2Av

And the thread asking for BBS to submit interest to join up can be found at https://bit.ly/3nyOg6J

I saw this earlier today, and put my infos in... the project is really cool, and worth learning about; let alone signing up for! I did a little of both, and really wanted to keep those links going and archived for me. :P Thanks for posting, and this looks really cool for current BBSes - like 10-15 US #s, too... its rad.

There was someone on Fight-O-Net going on about a similar solution a couple of years ago who wanted me to participate back when I still had a modem connected to my BBS computer, a Amiga 2000. I chose not to, mostly because I didn't want to have the responsibility to carry traffic to BBS:es belonging to others but also because I wanted my modem to be available for my users. Of course no-one ever called to I took it down eventually.

Regarding the earlier thread, the reddit post mentions several numbers.
In particular, it mentions the following:

    NPSTN, 785-1012

What is NPSTN? I looked it up on the internet and it sounds like it is a private VoIP network. Since it does not include an area code (or county
code), how do you call it from outside of the private network?

I tried calling it just now, without an area code, and got a voice
recording that thanked me for my call but did not actually tell me who I
had called. Then it started ringing, so of course I hung up. :)
