    Hey

My windows computer died today (Hard Drive). Lucky I'm in the process of building a new one. In the meantime I am using a linux one.

It just means I can't update windows builds for some things for the time being.

I'd better hurry up and get off Windows :)

Sorry to hear the box is la-gone-da...

I hate when this happens. Even when there are backups, the whole process of restoring/building into a new pc/hard drive is very frustrating. And the thing is, that this will happen, when you need your pc to do something serious or have a lot of work to finish :(

Hope you have backed up all your work/projects and nothing is missing. :)

Glad you have a backup. Was it a HD or SSD? I have a bunch of HDDs getting up
there in Age, but the SMART monitoring on them is all showing healthy.

I'm not sure how much I trust the SMART monitoring. I had a brand new HDD that I put into the system, and it said it was in 'pre-fail', and some categories said 'old-age', with a total runtime of less than 10 minutes...

Of course they still say that, and have been running smoothly for about a year now.

SMART is said to have an accuracy of 60%. This is, it has a 60% of giving you a meaningful waring on time to switch a failing drive or so.

So yes, it is not super effective.

Hard Drive, it came with the computer which was second hand, so no idea how
old it actually is. It was taking a good 5 minutes (at least) to boot up for
a while, then I got a SMART warning of impending failure.

Add to that, the SMART codes are not standard either. Apparently different manufacturers using the same code locations or names for different purposes. Not sure how that all works...

Sounds like "poorly" is how that all works.

I'm guessing here: https://www.backblaze.com/blog/what-smart-stats-indicate-hard-drive-failures/ is where the 60% number comes from. Wow.
    Fun stuff.
