• RCS/Castle Rock BBS Updates

From Black Panther@21:1/186 to All on Friday, October 23, 2020 02:17:22
    Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to take a few moments to update you on some things that are happening here at Castle Rock BBS.

    1) On Halloween, well probably a few days before, there will be a few 'additions' to Castle Rock BBS. I'm not going to say what they are, but if you stop by, you never know what you might see... ;)

    2) I'm currently working on a re-write of the BBS Review MPL. When this is completed, it will actually link with the BBS Listing MPL that is now online at
Castle Rock BBS and the Underground. Progress has been a little slow on this, but it is in the works, and you should see some output from that soon.

    3) I'm also pretty close to having all of the prompts *finally* set up the way I want them in Mystic. There are a couple of templates that I need to play around with. Among these updates, has been the addition of some text boxes. I might be adding a few more, in a few areas. I haven't decided yet. :)

    4) Progress is also being made on transferring the Hub 4 system over to a Docker container. I'm just finishing up the fidoconfig file for Husky, and I'll
be able to start testing it.

    5) I've also been working on trying to get the file areas organized. This has been a process that I've been working on now for over three years. The problem is, Mystic seems to be fighting me. I'll move the files into another area, and the next time my maintenance runs, the files are in both areas. I have talked to g00r00 about this, and he thinks he has found the issue, but waiting for a new pre-alpha in order to test. There is also an issue with files being deleted
and mass-uploaded again, giving them a new file date. I've had days with 3,000 new files showing up, and they're files from a shareware CD from 1996.

    6) RCS will be releasing a couple other MPLs in the very near future. Be
on the look-out for them, as I think they are looking nice!

    7) Also, on that note, I would like to personally thank the Godfather, for assisting me with a couple MPL projects that are in the works, along with testing them out on a Windows system. The Underground is also an Official Distribution site for RCS! I would also like to thank Avon, for allowing me to claim fsxNet as the Official Network for RCS releases! Agency BBS is also an Official Distribution Site for RCS! Also, I would like to that apam, for helping me to not sell my hands and shirt. ;) He knows what I'm talking about. Seriously, he's been helping me debug and move forward on a couple other projects. Lastly, I would like to thank the fsxNet community. You have put up with me and my long novels like this one, for almost 4 years! :) This network has been the biggest support system that I've ever seen. You are there in rough
times, you help me debug programs when I'm on a roll coding, you stop over at CRBBS and help test new ideas, and always give constructive feedback. Thank you
all, from the bottom of my heart.

Now that I've taken a bunch of your time, and a lot of you are probably thinking, tl;dr. :) If there is something that you would like to see done as an
MPL, let me know. I do have a couple other ideas that I would like to do, but I
also want to finish a few projects before I start them. But, if I get any requests, I will do my best to get it done. It can be something new, or if there is an older MPE you would like to see converted, or even an older mod for
a different BBS program, let me know. I've actually been looking at some of the
old Proboard PEX programs to see what was done at the time. Some of them would make good MPLs. :)

Thank you all for reading all of this. It wasn't suppose to be this long of a message... :)

Haha that took a few minutes to click.. glad I could help. Sorry I haven't done

Between you & Deon extolling the virtues of Docker, I really need to spend some
    time to understand Docker better.

I've had days with 3,000 new files showing up, and they're files from a

Are these Night Owl CDs? I used to have these on my board back in the day. I had a 4 disc CD changer in my PC with 4 of those in it.

If there is something that you would like to see done as an MPL, let me
know. I do have a couple other ideas that I would like to do, but I also want to finish a few projects before I start them.

A tagline MPL for mystic? I've seen some hints from g00r00 that he was thinking of either adding them or making it available to add as an MPL. Right now I've just been adding taglines manually. Yes, I know, I could use MultiMail or something, but having it available in Mystic would be awesome.

It's one thing about retro BBSing that seems to be falling by the wayside.

Hmm I never had nightowl CDs, but also never had a CD changer either, I was able to scrape together 4 or 5 single speed SCSI cdroms, the type that required caddies and hitch them up at one stage. Can't remember what happened to those...

I'm still trying to completely wrap my head around it, but it seems like a perfect solution to what I'm trying to accomplish here. :)

Are these Night Owl CDs? I used to have these on my board back in the day. Ihad a 4 disc CD changer in my PC with 4 of those in it.

I actually didn't use the Night Owl Cds. I was a fan of the Cream of the Crop CDs. The original Castle Rock BBS ran on a full-size tower, which had 4 CD-Roms
installed in it. I did end up having to change them out on occasion, when new CDs came out.

A tagline MPL for mystic? I've seen some hints from g00r00 that he was thinking of either adding them or making it available to add as an MPL. Rightnow I've just been adding taglines manually. Yes, I know, I could useMultiMail or something, but having it available in Mystic would be awesome.

I've actually tried doing that, as I'd like to see one as well. The problem I ran into, is Mystic stores the message information in memory. He had mentioned at one point, that having an MPL insert the tagline using the 'Saving Message' prompt isn't working, as it seems the message is saved before the prompt is displayed. I haven't given up on the idea though! ;)

It's one thing about retro BBSing that seems to be falling by the
    wayside.

And, it seems to be one of the simplest that could be accomplished...

You and me both; I'm running a Proxmox host, and keep hearing about
lxc container support. I'd love to containerize the BBS and run it on
a more modern platform than an old crufty laptop.

(ignoring the fact that my Proxmox host is a slightly newer, slightly
less crufty laptop, albeit one level of abstraction away...)
