I think all the repairs are in place this time...

With SuperBBS every node has its own address set, and for some strange reason as seen there were nodes with 0, 100 and 101 in there. So cycling through the node configs one at a time and setting them all to 101, and then most importantly hitting the reset button across all VM's, it only reads the config on startup. Finally put that one to bed.

I'm still miffed at the decision of the batch file to suddenly stop working. Can't think of anything that changed there at all. And I thought the move was nicer than copy and delete originally.

All that remains is to try and figure out tighter security on the telnet via ssh issue.
