I'm a stubborn old coot. I don't evacuate. Besides, I don't have room in the car to take the dogs, and can't leave them behind.

Well I sure hope you stay safe. I know it's "just" a tropical storm,
but wind and water can be a "b" if you know what I mean. We get
    tornados here .. no fun.

Having animals is such a big responsibility and a lot of people don't understand it.

Last year there were flash floods all around my area. Luckly my barn is in a high enough location, because I am convincing my horses to get into the car no way.

Exactly. People think I'm crazy, but my dogs are like family.

20 years or so ago, I lived next door to a smallish horse stable. (This is Texas, yes stables in the city)

We had a Tropical storm come through and come back, Flooding everywhere. The owners of the stable lived maybe a mile away, but couldn't get there. Guess who gets phone calls and is out in the storm checking on 10 horses that aren't mine?

    Hahaha.

When some neighbour's horse gets naughty and escapes his field, I am usually the only guy around, so I am the dude to catch him
and return him back home, so I know the feeling.

I used to pay a visit to every horse and donkey in the village and in surrounding settlements on weekends, so most equines
around think I am a great guy.

I hope those horses turned out to be ok.

Greek-letter tropical storms mattering is certainly a new one, that seems appropriate for 2020, but, still, condolences that it's affecting you.

On a related note, obligatory XKCD - https://xkcd.com/1126/

It talks about the last two named storms of the 2005 season, when they last
    ran out of normal names.

Considering how expensive it is to keep a horse, I'm not sure if "gentrification" is the right word for the loss.

But I imagine they were not polo horses.

    No not polo horses.

The nearby areas are in a rebuild/renewal state, so I'm guessing the owner sold
that lot for a profit. Besides, it was only couple of miles from the heart of Downtown Hpuston.

I have had a similar problem. Some random horse would escape his field and come pay us a visit. More often than not they want to join my own horses, which is troublesome because mine are EXTREMELY jealeous. As soon as they see me walk to another horse they get crazy angry.

It depends on the climate. Horses here are very cheap to keep and even people who is not well-off can afford to have some as pets in rural areas.

I ran the numbers back in the day and my horses are costing me less than what a premium bar of soap costs, each day.

The real drawback is that having them ties you to the place they live in. Money, not so much. Heck, you can buy two horses for less than people spends in a smartphone these days. You are not going to gbuy a high-end-racer-winner for 500 bucks, but a cheap horse can love you the same so...

Back to cost.. even if you factor in the cost of a vet? (do

a sudden health issue? I can see feeding can be pretty cheap

A neighbor of mine across the road has 3 palominos. The

often facing near the end of my driveway as I head off for
town in the morning. They are a beautiful sight.

A recent "60 Minutes" episode (a weekly USA news program)

realize that bucking bronco horses were specially bread to
buck. I thought the animals was strapped with a special

    Any thoughts on that sport?

All the soap I have in my store uses vegetable oil as a base. The exception is the donkey milk soap for obvious reasons.

The sort of buyer who likes Premium Bio Eco things cares a lot about this sort of thing so I have to be very anal about the
    products I carry :-P

My favourite mare used to get a hoof injury each year due to excess naughtiness
but it never broke the bank. The only problem
is that a lot of orthoprothesic's are not done her size (she is a big draft mare) so I either bought customized material or
    improvised some makeshift solution.

When they need a cycle of antibiotics it can get pricey but other than that I don't get many vet expenses. Vaccines and
dewormers are dirty cheap because almost nobody gives them to their horses :-( Probably the same reason why vets are cheap. If
a horse here goes lame people is more likely to turn him into burgers than to call the vet :-S

It is not something I want to talk about because I don't have first hand experience with that world. It is an American thing
    mainly.

I have read from trusted sources that wild bronco races are very dangerous for both horses and riders. One of my mares tore a
barn door appart because she got scared when the otehr one tapped her back with
the nose. It was just a minuscle movement for
her, an startled "oops!". With so little effort she crushed the gate and then she looked at me with her sorry face. When you
talk about these levels of strength I can see that putting a bunch of untrained
frightened horses in the same track is a bit
    risky.

Now, trying to ride a bucker in a controlled pen? I really have no opinion on it.

Some of it depends on the environment the animal is in, and what value is attached to them. From having had a few steers in the past I can also attest that "drugs" are pretty cheap. Mind you its a hell of a job chasing the steers down, you nearly need to use a baitcaster or slingshot to get them ;)
But if the animal has a problem, in my case they were destined for the freezer so you'd get it put down. On the other hand if you have a more emotional investment in your animal, you might be inclined to keep paying for it.

It'd become a toss up between is it worth seeing the animal in trouble, and put it down, or let it go on in trouble if you can't/don't want to get a vet.

On a complete aside, we had a local area VET who was known as Dr Death, everything he touched died. You didn't bother calling him, you'd have to rely on old hands around the area to help you out. So if you don't have the locals to fall back on/ask you might be in strife too.

TBH in my case what matters is if you can ensure a certain quality of life for the animal past a certain point.

I had a 16 or 17 years old mini-hunter dog whose health was very, very, very bad. He could not move by himself so we had to
take him from a place to another. On the other hand, the little bastard was such a happy dude because he loved all the
    attention he got.

When you have a pet with a bad condition you may be wondering if it'll be better to put him down of if he is still ablñe to
enjoy what remains of his life. It is a very tough decision and I recommend it to nobody. Whatever you decide, your chouice
    will hunt you forever.

In the end we took care of this little dude until he died naturally much later.
He was close to a tetraplegic but you could
tell he was always in a good mood :-)
