On top of all the other fun stuff going on in the world and my life,
now there is the joy of tropical storm actually coming here.
Stay safe Charles, are you evacuating or staying put? I saw this
local news this AM.
I'm a stubborn old coot. I don't evacuate. Besides, I don't have room
in the car to take the dogs, and can't leave them behind.

Having animals is such a big responsibility and a lot of people don't understand it.
Last year there were flash floods all around my area. Luckly my barn is in a high enough location, because I am convincing my horses to get into the car no way.

20 years or so ago, I lived next door to a smallish horse stable. (This is Texas, yes stables in the city)
We had a Tropical storm come through and come back, Flooding everywhere. The owners of the stable lived maybe a mile away,
but couldn't get there. Guess who gets phone calls and is out in the stormchecking on 10 horses that aren't mine?
When some neighbour's horse gets naughty and escapes his field, I am usually the only guy around, so I am the dude to catch him and return him back home, so I know the feeling.
I hope those horses turned out to be ok.

Those horses turned out fine. I passed by there not long ago, The
stable is gone. Damn gentrification.
Considering how expensive it is to keep a horse, I'm not sure if "gentrification" is the right word for the loss.
But I imagine they were not polo horses.
I've had a horse or two wander up to various homes I've lived in. The bigge problem is usually convincing my dogs that it's not a new dog that wants to play.

Not new at all, it happened in 2005. :)
I've been through plenty of tropical storms/hurricanes, just really didn't want the hassle this year.
It depends on the climate. Horses here are very cheap to
keep and even people who is not well-off can afford to
have some as pets in rural areas.
I ran the numbers back in the day and my horses are
costing me less than what a premium bar of soap costs,
each day.
The real drawback is that having them ties you to the
place they live in. Money, not so much. Heck, you can buy
two horses for less than people spends in a smartphone
these days. You are not going to gbuy a high-end-racer-
winner for 500 bucks, but a cheap horse can love you the
same so...
Maybe the words horses and soap should not appear in the same
sentence. LOL
Back to cost.. even if you factor in the cost of a vet? (do
horses get yearly medical checkups?) ..or a visit to deal with
a sudden health issue? I can see feeding can be pretty cheap
if allowed to graze, but what about the cost of supplements,
meds?
A recent "60 Minutes" episode (a weekly USA news program)
featured a story on a bucking broncos family. I did not
realize that bucking bronco horses were specially bread to
buck. I thought the animals was strapped with a special
harness to cause an irritation and therefore tricking the
horse to buck unnaturally.
Any thoughts on that sport?
When they need a cycle of antibiotics it can get pricey but other than that I don't get many vet expenses. Vaccines and dewormers are dirty
cheap because almost nobody gives them to their horses :-( Probably
the same reason why vets are cheap. If a horse here goes lame people
is more likely to turn him into burgers than to call the vet :-S
It'd become a toss up between is it worth seeing the animal in trouble, andput it down, or let it go on in trouble if you
can't/don't want to get a vet.
In the end we took care of this little dude until he died naturally much later. He was close to a tetraplegic but you could tell he was always in a good mood :-)
