• Kids gone RV'ing

From PalKat@21:4/137 to All on Saturday, September 19, 2020 09:41:16
This morning was entertaining, our son Seth turned 21 yesterday and today his buddy David (who also just turned 21 last month) took David's new "Walter White" RV with our daughter Jade who is 18 to go camping in the
Jemez (Mountain about 30 minutes from us) for the weekend as part of our Son's BDay weekend. David for 6 months wanted an old conversion van to go exploring the US in, well my buddy Robert's father is a retired mechanic and for a hobby he restores anything on wheels. About 5 years ago Roberts dad bought a Walter White RV (being we live in the breaking bad area) and he restored it to run like new (only 35k miles on it) and cleaned it up. So about 3 months ago I
told David about it as the RV was well in his budget. David was curious so
one Sunday I took him to Roberts dads house and Roberts dad knocked $500 off and David was sold! So this weekend is their maiden adventure in it.

It was very cool at 7am this morning when David pulled up in the 1981 RV to
get our son and daughter. As they loaded up the RV the usual nosy
neighbors opened their garages to watch 3 "Kids" load up an RV and take off
    for the weekend!

My wife and I feel some FREEDOM as were left with the the 2 remaining girls
11 & 6. So we will enjoy our semi freedom for the next 48 hours and not know what to do!! LOL

My buddy Robert and I laugh as how many 20 year olds buy an RV.

There's been a big uptick in RV and camper sales since COVID hit. Apparently camping is one of the safer things folks can do.

It is also going to teach them a fair bit of responsibility as things break and
they have to deal with it on the road.

One of my fun things to watch on YouTube is the various "Van Life" couples (and
some solo) where they effectively build out their own RV from a cargo van, bus or box truck and then take it all over the place. Most of the successful channels are in their mid-20's and have at least one attractive person in the group.

There sure has been, my son's friend David has had this idea for the past
year I just think the whole Covid thing lit the fire under him.

It is also going to teach them a fair bit of responsibility as things break and they have to deal with it on the road.

That is for sure! Again David has learned a lot in the just 2 months of
owning the unit and getting it ready. He did move into it and out of his bedroom at his parents house. He now lives in their driveway. LOL

Okay so now I will go check that out, sounds like you can not be disappointed on that channel as a viewer! ;)

Okay so now I will go check that out, sounds like you can not be disappointed on that channel as a viewer! ;)

I can name a few channels to search for:
"Eamon & Bec" are a Canadian couple based in Toronto. Before COVID they were in Morocco after having shipped their van from Canada to England and then driving/ferrying there. They had to abandon their van and start building a new one. They recently completed their build and are driving around Canada now. Their new build starts at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvHUhpJjVQo&ab_channel=Eamon%26Bec

"The Endless Adventure" are a US couple that were full time travellers (backpacks and Air B&B's). Since COVID they bought a 1975 Class C and are gutting and rebuilding it. For them, start at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsWGuW2H4pA&ab_channel=TheEndlessAdventure

"Kara & Nate" are another US couple that were full time travellers - they had just hit 100 countries and 7 continents when COVID hit. They bought a used van,
made some tweaks and hit the road. While you *can* watch their whole video library (my wife and I did), their van story starts at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9X5H7dxbzw&ab_channel=KaraandNate

Those are my top 3 favorites. Other fun ones to watch are:
Trent & Allie - Were in Columbia and had to leave their van, remodeled a camper
and are building a tiny home in the Utah mountains.

The Nomadic Movement - They had decided to plant roots temporarily in Panama before COVID and started building a "tiny home farm".

    Enjoy the rabbit hole!

That is an awesome story! I have started itching for another road trip. I usually take one every couple of years and, so far, they have all been to
head North to start/finish circle tours of the Great Lakes. I take my car.
For some of the trips I have in mind it would be nice to one day have
something large enough to "live in" while I am on the road. I remember Winnebagos being a big thing in the 1970's.

Thanks for that write-up.. I've watched SOME van life stuff before; a
comedian in a $90,000 white panel van with nice white interior... but the detail you gave is great and I'm gonna check out your suggestions.

Youtube, while it has a lot of bad bits... tracking and suggestions and whatnot, is pretty cool in 2020. If you remember to find the data YOU want to find, and not go into rabbit holes that end you up at a completely different end.

Thanks for yer suggestions - you just ate up my Sunday.

#vanlife started a while ago, millenials not being able to pay
inflated rent might have started it. It's interesting that a couple
of years after Instagram influencers started making money posting
photos of young people looking boho and happy, now you're seeing
YouTube videos of people talking about how #vanlife isn't what it was
    cracked up to be.

That's a formula, and it apparently pays well enough to pay for a
life on the road. More power to them, I wish I'd had the resources
and the time was right to van it when I was in my 20s.

Took me a minute - yeah, most of them are couples and they'll occasionally have
a guest stay with them. Those are short periods though.

Yeah, I've seen some of those as well, especially the ones from 2018 when the reality hit hard for kids that didn't know they'd have to adult.

That is an awesome story! I have started itching for another road trip.

In the days if long lost youth, we used to get around in a tad over 1t van.

    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7e/1985_Nissan_Urvan_%2 8 E23%29_SWB_4-door_van_%282015-07-14%29_01.jpg/1280px-1985_Nissan_Urvan_%28E23
    %29_SWB_4-door_van_%282015-07-14%29_01.jpg

This thing was old when I got it, and you'd have to flog the living daylights out of it in 4th to get it to do 100kph, if you stuck it in 5th you'd end up doing ~90 it didn't have the grunt to push it anymore.

Anyway this thing made a number of trips with a mattress in the back, stereo, esky, etc.. They were good times, pretty free to just trundle around and do whatever you wanted, so long as the finances held out and the beast still rolled.

Somewhere along the line, I think it was for a Bathurst trip it got the mirrors and bumpers sprayed fluoro green, and picked up the moniker of the big green love bus from someone.
