You would just create a text file with the Magic name you want to request.
Name the file something original, such as your fido net number and node
number, and use either .req or .REQ for the file extension.

Connect to my binkd server here, using my fido address of 1:317/3, and send
    the file.

My end, should find the file for you and send it to you, along with a netmail in a .pkt file, on the same connection.

That is one way. When reading messages on my MBSE system and reading an area like FIDO-REQ with files availble from other nodes I can press <Alt> F and golded will give me a pick list of filenames in the message that I can choose from. When I save that message MBSE's tosser will will scan that message out and create a file request for that node. I just wait a few minutes for my mailer to poll the node in question and request the files. If the request was successful I'll find those files in my inbound.

Other mailers like BBBSs mailer are simpler. I hit <Alt> G for "get files", and
enter filenames or magic names and the node to request them from. BBBSs mailer doesn't support file request over binkp, they are only supported over EMSI for dial-up or ITN mailer sessions.

So.. getting that done is a little different depending on your software.

I guess you are referring to outbound freqs from BBBS itself?

On the other hand, I've had successful freqs when connecting
to the filegate repository at PRISM BBS (fidonet). It's binkp
    if I recall.

BBBS will send a .req to a binkp node and then hang up before that node can send the requested file. It's not a bug it was never implemented on the binkp side. I hope that BBBS will be updated to support file requests over binkp connections but I don't know if that will ever happen.

I think (but not sure) that Prism BBS answers with binkd so file requests could
work that way. There is also a BBBS answering on another port.
