    Hey Everyone,

As some of you may know from my previous ramblings, the company I work for was sold to a US company. We're the first Canadian company they've purchased (so far).

I've been through this before in a previous life & I'm surprised to see how similar everything is going through this acquisition. It's almost like
there's a playbook that companies follow. "Business as Usual: A
    guide to progressive assimilation"

We were an IT department of 9 and now we're 2. The rest of the office was gutted as well, almost 70 jobs lost in the middle of this pandemic and shake ups on the plant side as well, though not as bad.

I'm thankful that out of all of the people that were cut, I got to keep my
job (so far). I really wouldn't want to be out there looking for a job right now.

It was announced today that we'll be moving out of the office we're in and consolidating into the factory area. This only makes sense as we don't need that much space with so few people.

So my new project for the next while will be relocating the server room from head office into the plant. This will no doubt take me away for a bit, though I'm not sure how soon we'll be starting. From what I understand they'll want us out of the space by the end of October which is rather ambitious.

Not really sure why I'm typing this, but thanks for reading.

That's a significant change. I can imagine how fortunate you

How much equipment and wiring are you talking about?
Hopefully it won't be one of those situations where 1 screw

'Cuz you're feeling anxious and under a seemily impossible

Wow, man, that really sucks. As an American, I'm really sorry. We've got to
get over this obsessive quest for maximum productivity in service of greed
and just let people have jobs that don't kill them physically, emotionally, and/or spiritually.

Well first up thanks for sharing... bugger this sounds really stressful and
as if 2020 hasn't been stressy enough eh?

I guess all you can do is roll with it and realise what things you have the power to control and what things you don't.

Easy for me to say, hard for me to do... I tend to think too many jumps ahead at times and spend way too much energy worrying about things that don't come
    to pass.

You'd think as I'd get older and know this stuff that it should be less
dramas in the head, and to be fair at times it is, but still .. it can get
the best of me at times too.

So I share all of this in some convoluted way to really say 'thinking of you' and feel free to decompress here as and when you want.

    Best, Paul

I hope I didn't make it sound like I was harping on Americans. At my last
job I met a lot of great (and some not-no-great) people on both sides of the border. Personnel cuts seem to be part & parcel of corporate mergers and acquisitions.

We've got to get over this obsessive quest for maximum productivity in service of greed and just let people have jobs that don't kill them physically, emotionally, and/or spiritually.

That seems to be one of the hardest parts of this. To these big corporations we're just numbers. Some of my co-workers started at this company when I was
8 years old and then are told "you're not needed anymore".

It really eliminates the human factor. These are real people with families that are losing their jobs. Some of whom were 4-10 years away from
    retirement.

It'll be a big job. All servers & communications are hosted at head office.

So pretty much everything will be down when we do the move. Fortunately it's not far physically, so provided we can get our services moved over the same
day it shouldn't be *too* bad.

The hard part will be turning an old lunch room into a fully functional
server room; complete with power, AC, fire suppression & access control in time.

Starting at the end, I hope you're writing this because its your BBS
community. For myself, during many a years of my teenage life, I found solice in the computer/BBS/scene. I think that few people will state this; and I
still feel like thats why some of us are here.

I don't know you, yet, but I feel ya. It sucks that companies do this with
more thought on the bottom line than the employees most likely made the
company worthwhile to purchase in the first place.

It sounds like you're at least stoked that you have work to do... and while moving your network room sounds like a worthwhile and challenging task, I
hope that they aren't having you do a bunch of work before they cut any more employees.

I hope that it remains viable for you and you enjoy the transition period...
I hope that they see who the important employees are; and that you are a part of that success.

Anyway, you got people here to type to. You got people here who care. You got friends in your BBS scene... just like 1995, brother.

Keep us in the loop in the weeks to come. Theres always an ear for you in me; and I'm sure in others on fsx.

Good luck and I hope you get to keep your job. The last private sector job
I had, we had a similar happening. It was a regional US company that a
French company had bought. I got there between the time they bought it and when they gutted it 2 years after I started. I was a part of the IT/Data Entry department (as a Computer Operator) and I was a part of the "guts" which
got tossed aside. In our case, the factory got closed also as they merged
us with another US company they owned. Both still existed, on paper, but
ours was a sales department, and smaller IT department, only.

Two to three years after that, the French sold us to another US company
with even more redundancy. The sales department was cut back some more,
and the IT deparment was disolved. So, the company went from working in the office of a big factory with 800+ workers, to working in part of the office section of a closed factory with 30-50 workers, to (last I heard) working out of a small office in some office park with 5 or so workers.

    That was in 1994-1996.

... The number you have dailed...Nine-one-one...has been changed.
