• netmail, fsxNet and learning FTNs...

From paulie420@21:2/150 to All on Thursday, August 20, 2020 16:05:28
So since I don't have much experience with FidoNet or FTNs, I have a few questions... I wanted to send an fsxNet user a netmail earlier... and I realized that I don't even know how to doso.

So, if I wanted to send apam a message, how do I know his address - knowing nothing other than he is a user on fsx???

Do you suggest any reading about FidoNet/FTNs that might answer all these questions?

    Thanks folks...

Look in the nodelist. Mystic has a nice nodelist browser that makes it easy
to look up people/nodes/BBSs in the nodelist

I don't know of a good primer for all that but it comes with experience.. :)

If you want to practise, you can send ping netmails to Hub 3 (or my BBS) and they'll reply...

Like email <person>@<address> - so the hub ping@21:3/100.

Otherwise to users it is <person>@<ftn bbs address>

Every BBS software is a little different, so it comes with a bit of trial and error learning. I found that sometimes it helps to have an account on
another BBS you can use for sending/receiving netmail, or for when I accidentally move am echomail message and can't remember what area it was supposed to be in.

Do you suggest any reading about FidoNet/FTNs that might answer all these questions?

The FidoNet policy 4 document is worth reading all the way through. But as
how to make an FTN work perfectly or how to configure or use a specific BBS software? That's a black art that only seems to come from experience and
Q&A in places like this. I've also found that message area searches and BBS software change notes can be useful as well.

Personally, I'd send it to the username, at whatever address is at the bottom of the message.

E.g., I know we've done netmail before, but if you sent a message to Adept at the address at the very bottom of this message, it'd work.

Or at least should. I assume there are always caveats. :)

I know you have probably heard this a dozen times, but Paul Hayton (AVON) has
a fantastic set of videos, pretty much explaining everything. I used them
when I first put Mystic up because it had been over 2 decades since I last
ran a BBS and was extremely rusty so to speak. With the videos I was on
fsxNet, FidoNet, and now 11 other nets in no time.

I hadn't thought to look at the sig to see what BBS they were using. I also never put 2+2 together that Mystic Guy is Avon/Paul.

So I second what Bucko is saying. There are probably five places I'd say to look, in order of ease and likeliness of having the answer:

    1. Later YouTube Mystic Guy videos.
    2. Earlier Windows-specific Mystic Guy videos where there are gaps in later videos.
    3. Mystic Wiki general areas.
    4. Mystic Wiki command reference and what's new sections.
    5. FidoNet Policy 4 document.

98% of your questions will be covered there.

Ok... so I added fsxNet, BUT I didn't DO anything with the weekly nodelist...
I probably have to run it thru mutil and add it, huh?

Anyway, I was also told you can search the nodelist in whatever BBS software your using. That was also helpful - thanks, ma'am.

I agree with you; his videos whip the llama's ass... however, there was no
file toss 'next video' ever posted, and it gets you going on a BASIC setup.
No worries, I'm grateful... but there should be a FTN wiki somewhere.
However, I'm not just saying that to the gods thinking it magically shows up. :P

The araknet info ZIP also has a great .DOC file about the process that is
very detailed. Again tho, that gets the NETs running... not the files... nor does it explain how to find folks netmail addresses and the like.

I've gotten mostly all details I need from here tho. So very happy, indeed.

I do a nightly maintenance that does the following...

    1. MergeNodeLists (this is the one you're talking about above)
    2. PurgeMessageBases
    3. PackMessageBases
    4. LinkMessages

When you do #1, it'll dig through your files folder (you specify where) for
the current nodelist for a particular network, then convert it to what Mystic needs. If it's done right in conjunction with filetoss, the updated nodelists will magically be processed.
