    Hi guys.

I'm still around and about. The job I am interested in applying for was
finally advertised about a week ago and closes in another 5 days times. I'm working hard on my written application then will be working on some role playing practices for an interview that will hopefully follow.

I think in around 3-4 weeks time I should know where it all ends up.

Have been inactive in BBSing the last week or so, sending Deon a few nodes to add and otherwise just having some time away from it all while I throw my energies into the job application and supporting my wife.

She's not doing too bad but certainly has good and bad days as the emotional loss and grief of loosing her last surviving parent hits her. She and her brothers are still trying to tidy up affairs related to her mums estate, getting a lifestyle property ready for sale, lawyers stuff etc.

My mum turned 77 the other day and I sent her flowers and told her how much I loved her. I felt a bit guilty as my poor wife whilst wishing my mum all the best must have felt sad at the same time. Sucks eh?

Oh for the record, despite the COVID dramas we're all facing and the many job losses in my country (and probably yours too I guess) I have so far been
lucky and not lost my current role. So the job hunt if really about chasing a role I have wanted in my business for some years and after 10 years it's finally come up. Hence my head down, total focus on putting my best foot forwards.

I hope you're doing well wherever you may be. Thanks for posting in fsxNet
and keeping the echomail areas alive with banter.

    Best, Paul

I've been busy with things to lately although I have (as always it seems)
been busy on the BBS also

I've actually switched to MBSE BBS recently. I did run MBSE back around
2005 or so, so I knew it quite well already.

What I was running before (HPT/HTick/Binkd) is/was great and worked very
well but there was no BBS interface and I missed that so I switched back
to MBSE after running a number of different softwares.

She's not doing too bad but certainly has good and bad days as the emotional loss and grief of loosing her last surviving parent hits her.
She and her brothers are still trying to tidy up affairs related to
her mums estate, getting a lifestyle property ready for sale, lawyers
    stuff etc.

I went through that recently when my mom passed. I had a lot of help from
my sisters so it didn't take long and I hope your wife will be passed all
    that soon.

My mum turned 77 the other day and I sent her flowers and told her how
much I loved her. I felt a bit guilty as my poor wife whilst wishing my
mum all the best must have felt sad at the same time. Sucks eh?

Maybe. It's also possible you wife will get some comfort from your mum, I
    hope so.

A lot has changed here in BC and I am just about ready to go back to work.
I don't know if the caronvirus has changed things at the foundry, my guess
is it has but I'll find out soon if I can get back to work there.

If not or not right away I'll have to find something else.

I hope you're doing well wherever you may be.

I hope thing are going well for you also and that things progress in a good
    way for you.

Yeah, I had thought about sending you a personal message, but figured you'd probably rather spend some time away from the bbs.

It's got to be hard. Loss is hard.

Yeah, it sucks. It's one of those things. Your world crashes down but life doesn't stop for you. It would be nice if it all could be put on pause for a bit to catch your breath. I guess it's just patience and time, and each time you face one of those little reminders, it gets a bit easier.

I hope you're doing well wherever you may be. Thanks for posting in

I'm going ok. Haven't been posting so much of late. Been rather flat the last week or so. Maybe it's the loss of our girls catching up to me and the realization i'm not getting any younger. I don't know. Just flat and
everything is a bit much effort.

Staying focused on the positive is always a good thing. One of several good things to come out of this drama is more companies will broaden their potential
employee search locations. For instance, more people will be able to really work for companies not even in their own state. That is getting way more popular right now and helps both employer and employee.

Sorry for all the test messages. What I wanted to accomplish was to use a non fidonet BBS software that can use the NNTP protocol to import and export FTN messages to and from it. I got Jamnntpd running and Binkd was running too. I even was getting Crashmail to be able to handle it all (not a small feat thanks
to Jamnntpd not being able to run on any 64 bit operating systems, probably due
to the JAM libraries not being compatible with 64 bit systems) but when I exported messages Binkd would not pick them up and send them unless I manually moved the clo file to the outbound directory (it landed in a directory called fsxnet.015 instead).

I was never able to solve this so I just gave up and returned to my old Amiga based setup instead.

Har to believe 2020 is almost over - this has been the longest and shortest year simultaneously. It hasn't been all bad - I got into gardening a bit this year and managed to grow some tomatoes, basil, strawberries, and arugula.
I've got some garlic and onion overwintering right now as well. We've worked
on a few house projects as well and definitely had our fair share of lazy

Looking forward to chatting with everyone during the coming year. Hope you

Glad you decided to jump on the BBS train and checkout what we're all up to in history-land. :P Hope you like the textmode fun that BBSes are...

You've already found fsxNet, which is the most active message network on BBSes in... lol, 2021. You might like door games, and theres plenty of files to be had too... most are BBS-related, retro-computing, ANSI/text art packs and sometimes a sysOp's personal collection or interests. The best thing you'll find here is the community - the people. We're all pretty unique and I'd even say a fun group.

Hope you keep coming back, and enjoy what BBSes offer that you still can't find anywhere 'new' on the internet.

Right on, l0nepinemall! I'm Paul... well, another Paul - as Avon is also Paul and thats who's BBS you're posting from.

Well, your user name makes it a lot easier to remember :) Nice to meet you, Paul!

Glad you decided to jump on the BBS train and checkout what we're all up to in history-land. :P Hope you like the textmode fun that BBSes are...

So far it is a blast! I enjoy how BBSs are more text based - it seems more personal that way. I have soooo much to learn but so far there have been so many helpful folks giving me tips, so I should hopefully have the hang of it soon :)

That is my favorite part so far - the people! Everyone has been really welcoming and friendly. I'm looking forward to being a part of the community.

A pleasure to meet you, Paul - see you around, I hope!

    Best,
    Sonya (l0nepinemall)

    New blood!

Ha, there aren't initiations in BBS-land, right? ;)

Nice! The season in Utah was a bit meh, but I did manage to have a ton
of tomatoes, various herbs, some peppers, pumkins, onions, and berries.
I never manage to get more than one round of strawberries - my sister about 45 min away has batch after batch. Someday maybe I'll figure out

Wow, sounds like you had great success! I had some issues with my strawberries myself (although mine were more of the fuzzy, zorro-masked animal variety - everytime I would wait a day to pick one, I'd come back and the full berry and stem would be clean chomped off!). I tried to grow a red bell pepper but it never matured enough and stayed small and green. Still tasted okay though. Seattle weather probably didn't give it enough time in the sunshine to grow! I have some onions overwintering right now - I sure hope they turn out okay!

Act fast and you can get some great shots at the planets. My father purchased some nutty lense for his cameras - can just point and click to see rings on Saturn. Pretty slick.

Yes, unfortunately the telescope didn't arrive until just after the conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter, but it rained alllll day that day so I couldn't have seen it anyway. I know that they are still pretty close together, so I have got to get my act together and assemble it so I can sneak a peek. Your father's lenses sound amazing - I would love to see the rings on Saturn with my own eyes! What is he using?

See you around the BBSs :)

    Best,

I mostly grow hot pepper/chiles. The sweet pepper attempts have always yielded only a couple small ones and other creatures like them too much. Definitely have that issue with strawberries - I actually bit a wire cage around one area, the the other solution is to just plant them all over the place and hope to have enough to get a few.

    Welcome to fsxNet :)
I'm Anna from Karlsruhe, Germany - it's nice to see other women here :)

I've used BBSes in the 90s and also used FidoNet back then, but some weeks ago I decided to start BBSing again :)

Har to believe 2020 is almost over - this has been the longest and shortest year simultaneously.

    Oh zes...

It hasn't been all bad - I got into gardening a bit
this year and managed to grow some tomatoes, basil, strawberries, and arugula. I've got some garlic and onion overwintering right now as well. We've worked on a few house projects as well and definitely had our fair share of lazy days with movies, candy, and wine. I am hoping to turn my attention now to astronomy for a bit. I've signed up for an intro class for fun and just purchased a new telescope (a Zhumell Z130) that I now get to figure out how it exactly works!

This sounds nice, I hope you can enjoy it!
We also did more things at home, I've built my second retrocomputing kit,
a CP/M computer and created a case for it using a 3D printer. That took a while designing, testing and printing :)

I hope you have a good start into the new year!

The computers came in kit form, so I did not have to design much.
The first one is a "RC2014 Pro" kit. I've mostly assembled (soldered) one module per day. And afterwards, I've added more modules to it to upgrade
    it a little :)
I just had to create a case for it - as I did not have the 3D printer back then, I used wood and plexiglass for it.

The design of the case took several weeks, but I've not worked on it the whole time. Here are the pictures of it, from the outside: https://twitter.com/acn128/status/1326541341967351809

It's that time of year on the west coast, I suppose. Even sunny LA gets rain occasionally, and that time is around now.

Here, it's interesting because of the hard lockdown. So people are taking walks, but it's hard to find places without many people, because lots of

I wouldn't assume that non-sysop users are so uncommon. Just
looking at the fido Z2 pointlist indicates that there are many
people interested in having a quick and efficient way to access
    BBS messages.

There is also a modest boost of membership to the echos via

It's funny, I was told that women rarely

I have no evidence, but I assume it's a bit like online gaming. I was a GM of a RPG for 10 years, and knew many women in my guild but most were kept hush hush for annoyingly obvious reasons.

So.. by your guesstimate, how many vocal women are represented in
this hobby? (Janis K, yourself, April, and Anna? ..is that it?)

Sonja? Or is there another April on here/Fidonet?

And I think Janis K is on another level entirely. But she's in the middle of the Fidonet political mess, which I have _no_ interest in.

    And I have no idea.

I wouldn't assume that non-sysop users are so uncommon. Just

Okay, I'll cede the point, because I hope you're correct. :)

Just my tuppenceworth on this; despite my being tempted to become a sysop again, I keep thinking about doing it, and I remember what effort goes into it. I know I can set up Enigma or Mystic in about 30 mins, but it's what happens from there that counts. I don't think thatps bringing anything down. I've always seen it as an evolving thing. Right now, mine is stock while I'm getting the technical
bits together. Once those are more or less smoothed out, then I'll get to the customizing to fit my personality.

what happens from there that counts. If I made a half-assed BBS then

Nobody's BBS is perfect and they all have quirks.

down the scene as whole, for just having 'yet another stock BBS'.

There are people paying hundreds (maybe thousands) of dollars for ansi stock-art. They fill their BBS up with stock-art, and it's still a stock board.

Stock boards can be fun as long as they have fun content - message bases that people can enjoy, old forgotten shareware from the attic, doors that nobody is else running.

Some stock boards are better than others! I'd rather call a stock Mystic board than a fully decked-out Wildcat! board, because Wildcat! just really sucks! :)

I suppose there are probably at least a couple people like you, who possibly figured out all of that _before_ setting up a BBS. :)

For me... I'll admit Storm BBS doesn't have that much of a point. But I've enjoyed having gotten it themed, and I've enjoyed the outcome of my calendar project, even if I haven't entirely enjoyed the labor involved in pumping out 198 (and counting) ANSIs.

Being a non-sysop is cool, and I did that for a while, but not many sysops
give their users unlimited time - they still have automatic inactivity
    logouts.

For me that's frustrating because I could have typed half of a long message, got up to turn off the noodles, then come back to a screen that says "You've been logged out due to inactivity!"

It also feels good to know that I'm not being watched while I'm using a BBS. Being your own sysop removes anxiety about "What's Mr Tightwad gonna think?"

One last perk I'll mention: Other BBSs can disappear without warning. That kills conversations, and it makes people lose their rank in doors.

I started this BBS because I've wanted to since I was a teenager. If people call it, fine. If not, Still fine. I've run points off and on for a long
time, and they're fine too. I like playing with different software and
    trying new things.

Once I get this one more or less figured out to my satisfaction, I'll do it again with a different device and different software. And maybe again and again.

It doesn't matter if anyone calls them. I'm doing this for me. If people log onto it and like it as well, that's bonus points.

I think those days went away with DOS BBSes - when the BBS was running in
the corner with a monitor on it, that was one thing. Now, they're mostly running on VPses in data centers or, with multi-node BBSes, you're looking
at a status screen instead mirroring the user screens.

Since creating a BBS at the beginning of this year, I've learned that being a [good] sysOp is NEVER ENDING. :P

Sure, a stock system can be thrown up in minutes but... if you want to create something cool be ready for modifying for MONTHS. Literally. :P

For me, now, the modifying IS what I enjoy out of BBSing so... it works for me; but I'll tell you, I spend hours and hours every week on the board. Its rewarding and fun - but never-ending!! :P

Theres so many awesome boards out there; you can TOTALLY get the same community and be a part of it, by simply being a user on some boards. Pick yer favorites... theres tons of styles to find out there.

    Cheers all...
