• Neowise Comet

From NuSkooler@21:1/121 to All on Sunday, July 19, 2020 12:19:26
Anyone go check out Neowise yet? Took my daughter and her friend on a night hike in the mountains (mostly) away from the city lights last night. We were able to spot it with just our eyes. Binaculars were all we had beyond that which was enough to get quite a good look at it. Very cool!

There are some VERY dark and fairly high (8-9kish) areas in Utah that I camp at
here and there, so hopefully will get another chance at it perhaps with a telescope.

The last ones I remember getting good views of were Hale Bot as a teenager, and
Halley's when I was quite young.

Never heard of that thing. An approx 6700yr orbit makes it a kind of once
in lifetime event to at least try to gaze upon.

It is supposed to be just below the big dipper and rising nightly for the next couple days. The dipper is an easy view from my 8ft wide sliding
    glass doors facing north.

I don't recall witnessing Halley 1986, but I *do* recall Hyakutake in
1996, which seemed larger and more dramatic than Hale-Bopp. I was
expecting the tail of a comet to be somewhat animated, but I felt let down when the two comet's tails seemed static in the sky.

Is is very faint from my location in Ontario. I can't see a distinct
"point" at the head of the comet. For the most part the whole comet seems washed out at this time, but the tail seems to cover a rather large part
of the sky. A couple of my friends managed to capture some nice images:

Binoculars help to enjoy the spectacle.

For the last two weeks most of the images I've been hatching in the NASA
file area have been of the NEOWISE comet. That wasn't the case today,
today's image was of a heavy rocket the chinese sent up towards Mars I think.

    Nice shots!

Maybe some long exposure was involved in those, I dunno. To me, the comet always seemed be more like a blur in the sky than an obvious comet. Last night was a reasonably cloudless sky, but I couldn't spot the comet
    anymore.

There is a rather bright object in the southern sky right now (Northern hemisphere). I should pull out my previously mentioned telescope so see
if I can detect the difference between Jupiter or Saturn.
