So I also had no idea why anyone would spend $1000 on a chair that only works for a very specific situation.

I use a round antique piano stool - adjustable height by rotating the
seat. I like ingress and egress from any position. $20, maybe?

Funnt that ya'll are discussing computer chairs; I drastically need a nice
one as I sit. :/ ugh. Back problems galore... I left my last awesome $300
chair in Austin, Texas when I moved to Portland... and have been suffering
    ever since.

HR was having trouble spending its allocation and didn't want cut backs next time..

It horrifies me that you might be right.

It's sad that it couldn't have turned into, oh, "What expensive gadget would make things easier or more enjoyable for you?", and wind up with odd things like drawing tablets and Alphagrips (weird keyboard controller that seems
neat for doing stuff while lying prone, but requires re-learning how to use a keyboard.).

The corporate problem with that is how to track it all. You end up with a register with 20k different devices instead of one device for 20k units. And each individual item will have a different value and devalue at a different rate... have to try and keep some money out of the bean counters jobs by keeping it easier for them ;) But I concur with your principle, horses for courses would be nice.

If only, "toys for employees" would cover it all.

I suppose it'd be hard to take as a tax writeoff with that sort of category name, though.

But, yeah. I realize that a lot of items are working as intended, just not
    for what people oftentimes expect.
