• FTNs and fsxNet...

From paulie420@21:2/150 to All on Saturday, July 11, 2020 18:05:24
So I did follow Avon's guide to getting the FTN setup, but actually his dummy files weren't available and I was able to read an .INI and get it ironed...
if I had to label myself, I'd say I was intermediate....

That being said, I have everything on the messaging side pretty much ironed out... even maintenance. But its filearea time... I did a search here, didn't see any wiki or solid howto's, but did find some messages about the topic. Nothing that encompasses the whole process by any means - is there any info online that you can point me to?

I'm going to kick it off using the Mystic Wiki, fsxNet messages and general FidoNet/FTN info on the web... I'm sure I can muscle through but... if theres any resources I'd love a link or a pointer.

Also, I followed a guide on QWK messaging but my QWK (Dove-Net) message
basese seem to be tossing to the wrong areas/bases... maybe I just put the wrong #codes to the Dove-Net bases; any hints there at all? I know I'm vague, and will follow up with the author (Black Panther) of the post I used. Again, just looking for pointers before I dive in myself, alone... I did search. :P

    Thanks.

Check out the mutil.ini file in the Mystic directory. The files that Paul points to on his site are just excerpts on that file. e.g. I have the ImportEchoMail and FileToss stanzas in my mailin.ini and the ExportEchoMail stanza in my mailout.ini.

    Check out: http://wiki.synchro.net/howto:dove-net

This has the Conference #'s for each message base. (e.g 2001 for General,
2002 for Advertisements & so on) just make sure you match those numbers to
the QWK Base ID in your message base.

Yep, thanks - I was able to decipher the .INI - at least like... enough to
get the messages going. I'll tackle files soon - they did give me some troubles, but it was just attempt #1. I'll get there. :P

Perfect - THIS is what I was looking for... Dove tossed messages into the
wrong directories, but it might have something to do with reusing my
    synchronet username. Derp...

Thanks, this will get my Dove setup perfect too.

Appreciate the tips, only issue will be fsxNet file bases.... but I'll get there.

From what I've seen, the biggest thing is making sure the QWK Base ID is correct for each base. I've done that one myself...

Also, from what I've heard, the newest pre-release of Mystic will now allow someone to gate between FTN and QWK using Mystic. I haven't tried it myself, but I hope to take a look at it soon.

Theres the man! Hey BP, I appreciate your text on QWK... it was spot-on. I would suggest a link to the synchronet wiki page that lists the QWK base ID #:

    http://wiki.synchro.net/network:dove-net

and maybe even a list in text... thats where I got messed up, the first 6 or
so were consecutive so I just typed them all in order. Well, they are jumbled up a bit after the middle; as are my local message bases, because the
original sysOp must have moved bases around... like I did. :P On their end,
it would probably be smart to make them all consecutive but... I figured it out. Heres a list, in case you do want to edit your howto:

    General 2001
    Advertisements 2002
    Entertainment 2003
    Debate 2004
    Hardware/Software Help 2005
    Programming 2006
    Unix Discussion 2009
    HAM Radio Operators 2015
    Internet Discussion 2016
    Pro-Audio Discussion 2017
    Firearms Discussion 2018
    Sports Discussion 2019
    Religious Discussion/Debate/Evangelism 2020
    Hobby Corner (RC/modeling/etc) 2021
    Synchronet Announcements 2030
    Synchronet Discussion 2007
    Synchronet Sysops Only 2008
    Synchronet Programming (Baja) 2011
    Synchronet Programming (JavaScript) 2012
Synchronet Programming (C/C++ and CVS) 2014
    Synchronet Data 2013
    DOVE-Net Sysops Only 2010

Again, BP, thanks for your write-up- regardless of whether I could have got thru myself or not it certainly made it nice to have all the data I needed sitting right there. Appreciated.

I think the entire how-to needs a rewrite, in my opinion. :) It was quickly thrown together to help out a fellow sysop, and I decided to have it hatched out to help anyone else out.

and maybe even a list in text... thats where I got messed up, the first
6 or so were consecutive so I just typed them all in order. Well, they

I think the order probably started out alphabetically, but then other areas were added, and some probably removed... On my system, I keep them in alphabetical order, and the numbering is messed up as well...

Again, BP, thanks for your write-up- regardless of whether I could have got thru myself or not it certainly made it nice to have all the data I needed sitting right there. Appreciated.

You are very welcome. I'm glad it helped. I will re-write it so it's a little more up-to-date, and a bit more organized. It's on my to-do list! ;)
