I have Basic DSL Service with AT&T.

They have been sending me letters about their Advanced Digital Network.

From what I can guess by what I've read is they may be putting Fiber Optic lines in my area.

The letters mention a Wi-Fi gateway and to me it sounds like the Telephone Company is changing their DSL Internet Service to a Broadband Modem/Router
(as in Cable TV) which I learned is like using a Party Line instead of
having the Twisted Pair Private Line I now have with their DSL/Telephone Service.

I don't use Wi-Fi at all.

When I purchased my last AIO Printer/Scanner the first thing I did after plugging it in and turning it on was to Disable Wi-Fi on it.

One time I was at my Brothers home and connected my Notebook using a
CAT-5 cable to the Cable Router he uses.

I did notice a tremendous increase in Speed while I was using his gear.

He has an iPhone that can use the internet through the Broadband Router's
Wi-Fi connection.

What I would like to know is if AT&T changes me from Wired DSL to a Fiber connnection, can I disable the Wi-Fi SSID broadcast since I have no need
for it.

PLUS - I don't want anyone using their gear through the connect I pay for.
I never used any of my neighbors Internet Service, and I don't want others using my Internet Connection and slowing it down.

IIRC, Everyone who subscribes to Cable-TV Broadband Internet are ALL on
That One Wire going back to the Cable Companies equipment, and when very
many Subscribers are using Broadband, the Maximum Speed they advertise
isn't able to be used by anyone.

My folks didn't have a Telephone in our home until the 1950's, but we
had a Private Line, not a Party Line.

I remember picking up the Telephone handset at my Grandmothers home and
hearing someone already talking on it.

Grandma told me she paid less for on her Phone Bill because she had a
Party Line connection.

The new Price AT&T's letter mentions is a little less than what I'm paying
for DSL now.

A year or so ago something caused an A.C. Power Failure in my area.

I could use my Telephone to Call someone or Answer Calls because there are Lager Batteries in the Telephone Company Exchange to supply Power to the telephone lines.
As long as the Phone Lines are up I can use my Telephone.

One of my Neighbors who has Phone, Broadband and Television through the
Cable Company, couldn't use their Home Phone, Watch TV or get on the Internet. They used their Cell Phone to make Calls while the A.C. Power Lines was OFF.

I would have to have a UPS connected to their Broadband Router if the A.C. Power Lines failed if They change my Service.

RIGHT NOW I CAN CALL THE ELECTRIC COMPANY IF THE POWER LINES FAIL, SINCE
AT&T'S BATTERIES SUPPLY POWER TO MY TELEPHONE.

I would be out of luck as my neighbor was if I didn't have a UPS to supply temporary power to AT&T's broadband modem/router.
The idea of me paying for Electricity to power AT&T's gear causes the
Scotchman part of my heritage to grimace.

I have my computers connected to a UPS in case the power goes out so I can
Shut Windows XP Down properly when a A.C. failure happens.

I've never tried using my desktop computer on the UPS to see how long I
could use it.

But Windows doesn't like SUDDEN THINGS TO HAPPEN. Does it?

disabling the SSID doesn't disable WiFi... if you don't need or use WiFi for anything, then turn it completely off and don't worry about disabling portions of it...

Yes. Disabling the SSID would leave WiFi on but hidden unless you know the router name. I would forget the SSID and just switch WiFi off altogether!

Connect a hardline, if not already, to router and surf to it (usually http://192.168.1.1), enter ID & PW (mine 1st time was admin, no PW) then find the Wireless section and just turn it off. :) Remember to save changes and I always backup the router config to my HD.

Thanks, knowing I could turn Wi-Fi OFF on their Broadband Router makes me
feel better about accepting the change when AT&T offers it to me.

I was suppose to call them at a phone number before 05MAY2018 but didn't.

I still remember their advertisement I saw on T.V. that had Andy Griffith saying "Don't do anything", so I didn't this time too.

I prefer having a Cable/Wire plugged in my Computer to the Router instead
of opening up Wi-Fi to the whole world to use.

Knowing I "CAN" adjust the Router Settings to my preference has me feeling easier about accepting AT&T new Service if they offer it to me.

I had been thinking of looking for a Local BBS that still has Dial-Up
available so I could still get my BBS-Fix if I had dropped the DSL Internet Service I have with the Telephone Company.

I prefer a Two Wire Telephone connection to my home, but will let them
put whatever kind of Networking Box they have to put on my house to let
a Fiber Optic line replace the Two-Wires I have now.

BTW, I never wanted the AT&T Serviceman to replace the Carbon Block
Lightening Arrester Box on my house with the newer Network Connection Box.

The last time that Box had to be replaced, the Serviceman had to call a Supervisior to allow him to put a new Carbon Block at my house when the
older one needed replacement.

If anyone wants to walk up to the back of my home and plug an extension
wire in my Telephone Junction Box, they better have Alligator Clips on
the end of their extension wire if they want to use the telephone service
that I pay for. I know I'm a hard man.......

I guess Fiber Optic is less vunernable(sp?) to a Lighting Hit than Copper
Wire is.

Them using Fiber my let them not have to have so many Electrical Grounding connections between the Exchange and their Subscribers.

They would save bunches of $$$$$$$$$'s not having to have Lightening
Arrestors installed everywhere.

Hmmm, they must have an Employee who is of Scotchish heritage.......

And thanks for the reminder to Save the Old Router Settings before I change anything on it, and to also Save the Settings that I change on it.

I don't use Wi-Fi at all.

I use Wifi on all my laptops and also on the stationary machines.
To use WiFi on stationary machines you need a Network Adapter that
either plugs into a USB port or connects to a network port.

In my case it's an Asus USB-N13 Network adapter.

The laptops have a built-in WiFi adapter, even the oldest ones have it.

I still have two copper lines connected to the phone company.

Hello Ed Vance,

To answer your basic question, "Can the Wi-Fi part of a Broadband Router be turned OFF by me?" the answer should be yes. This is because turning Wi-Fi on and off is usually done at the router / modem in your home. No guarantees, though, as to what AT&T will do in the future.

A little late with an answer but here is my two cents worth. First DO NOT
give the land line as you found out the cable/Fiber phones die with some
power outages. And also do not think you can always use a cellphone as
besides dying in some power outages the computer controlled system can be
taken over by first responders and you could get "No Connection' in major disasters

On the wireless modem router as far as I know you cannot turn off the
WiFi portion. You just set up a secure password and set up wifi security
and just do not sue it

DO NOT believe AT&T about maybe getting Fiber if it is not in your area
already as th4y touted Fiber coming to my area some time back. After
several years of NO fiber even though they did put in some connection
boxes but never finished the project I gave up my wait and canceled their
wire DSL and went to Cox cable.

I agree. Your copper line is kept alive by the backup batteries of the
phone company so even though the cellphone and internet access die in a
lengthy power outage, the land line is still alive.

On the wireless modem router as far as I know you cannot turn off
the WiFi portion. You just set up a secure password and set up wifi security and just do not sue it

For WiFi reception I have a Huawei WiFi Mobile adapter and the laptops
are configured to receive the Wifi signal from that adapter that can be switched on/off.

For the stationary machine(s) I have Asus USB-N13 Network Adapters that
are also configured to work with the signal from the Mobile adapter.

The stationary machines can also use any free access point within reach
of the USB adapter. It has occasionally been necessary when the access
to my ordinary ISP has failed. This is possible by using the Win10 WiFi
menu to choose a such one.

Off course going mobile with the laptops I can set them to use any free
WiFi access point.

I expect to be carrying an oxygen cylinder in the somewhat near future.

Good to read that all is reasonably OK. I think that second hand smoke
isn't as dangerous as asbestos fibers.

If it had been smoking you'd probably have lung cancer. OTOH asbestos
dust can also cause the same problem.

Well, that's maybe better than the final I suppose.

I'm suffering from the after-effects from sending me home too early from
the hospital before I was ready to manage myself. First night at home I
fell upon my newly operated hip after I broke the neck of the femur on
jan. 2nd 2017.

The next day I was back in the same hospital bed that I just left and
wasn't allowed to move around with a rollator and crutches for a week
as I did B4 being sent home.

I have had to decrease the length of my 'scandinavian pole' walks from
10km to 5.6km. Now I do the walk in the same time I did on 10km before.

The muscles that died the second week in the hospital aren't recreated
at our age.
