    Mesoscale Discussion 0096
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
    0721 PM CST Mon Feb 11 2019

Areas affected...Portions of northeastern Illinois and Chicagoland
    Area

    Concerning...Winter mixed precipitation

    Valid 120121Z - 120715Z

SUMMARY...A mix of freezing rain and sleet will be possible through
the evening and into the early morning hours (4-5 AM CST). Highest
freezing rain rates are expected during the 12-2 AM time frame.

DISCUSSION...As a broad area of precipitation continues to spread
over the Upper-Midwest, a few surface observation stations across
the Chicagoland and vicinity are reporting freezing rain and
sleet/ice pellets. Dual-polarization KLOT radar imagery shows a warm
layer aloft as far north as a line from Rochelle to Evanston. As a
mid-level shortwave trough continues to approach from the west, the
850 mb low should deepen as it moves across northern Illinois. A
fairly long duration freezing rain/sleet event is expected through
about 4-5 AM CST. While freezing rain rates are not anticipated to
be overly high given the near freezing surface temperatures in the
surface to 850 mb layer, the duration of the event may lead to
modest ice accretion in some locations. The highest freezing rain
rates are anticipated to occur during the 12-2 AM CST period when
850 mb warm advection is maximized across the region.
