    Mesoscale Discussion 0036
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
    0833 PM CST Sat Jan 19 2019

    Areas affected...northern/central Pennsylvania... southern New
York... northern New Jersey... western Connecticut

    Concerning...Heavy snow

    Valid 200233Z - 200530Z

SUMMARY...Moderate to heavy snowfall will continue across the region
with 1-2 inch per hour snowfall rates likely.

DISCUSSION...Regional radar shows widespread moderate to heavy
snowfall over an expansive area of the Northeast. The heaviest
snowfall rates appear mostly confined near the northward-retreating rain/freezing rain/snow line across portions of central Pennsylvania
and into New Jersey. Some localized banding is evident farther north
across northern Pennsylvania, and snowfall is beginning to fill in
and become more expansive across southern New York into Connecticut.

These radar trends are expected to continue in the near term, with
gradual enhancement of the snowfall rates across portions of
    southern New York/Connecticut as mid-level warm-air
advection/frontogenetical forcing persist while the system continues
to lift northeast. RAP soundings continue to indicate the potential
for vertical motion through the dendritic growth zone across much of
the region. Widespread 1-2 inch per hour snowfall rates are likely, particularly along and north of the precipitation-type transition
zone. Some freezing rain will also remain possible in this
    northward-evolving transition zone.
