    Mesoscale Discussion 0758

    Areas affected...southwest/central South Dakota...Northwest Nebraska
    and the Nebraska Panhandle

    Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 181...

    Valid 170059Z - 170230Z

The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 181
    continues.

SUMMARY...Thunderstorms continue to increase in coverage and
intensity across much of WW 181. The threat of large hail and severe
wind gusts remains across the watch area. A tornado may also be
possible with storms across central SD as they shift toward Tornado
    Watch 180.

DISCUSSION...Latest regional mosaic radar data shows numerous strong thunderstorms ongoing/developing across much of WW 181. The
strongest of these storms is currently located over Hand County
South Dakota, where radar imagery suggest persistent mid-level
rotation and occasional transient low-level rotation as the storm
rides along/near a surface boundary. This storm will continue to
pose a threat for large hail (recent report of 1" hail) and severe
wind gusts (recent measured gust of 67 mph). A tornado may also be
possible with this activity as it shifts toward Tornado Watch 180
due to low-level shear being maximized near the boundary.

Convective evolution across the remainder of the Watch area is
rather messy, with numerous storms ongoing/developing. However, the
threat for strong winds and large hail remains due to the presence
of extreme MLCAPE (e.g., in excess of 3000 J/kg) and effective bulk
    shear around 40-50 knots.
