    Mesoscale Discussion 1666
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK

    Areas affected...central North Dakota

    Concerning...Freezing rain

    Valid 280203Z - 280800Z

SUMMARY...Light freezing rain, possibly mixed with sleet at times,
will increase in coverage across central North Dakota this evening
and continue into early Wednesday morning.

DISCUSSION...Occasional light snow has fallen this evening across
central ND. Recent radar trends show increasing precipitation across
northeast MT into northwest ND as the next in a series of shortwave
impulses tracks toward the area. In conjunction with this next wave,
some midlevel warming will occur and freezing rain, perhaps with
some sleet, will become more widespread across the MCD area heading
into the overnight hours. Precipitation rates are expected to remain
light, with forecast soundings from both the RAP and HRRR showing a
bit of dry air just above the near-surface cold layer. This should
initially keep freezing rain light. As the layer saturates with
time, rates may increase to near 0.05 in per 3 hour period by around
06z. Light freezing rain will continue for much of the night and
into early Wednesday morning, leading to hazardous travel conditions
    across the region.
