    Mesoscale Discussion 1449
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
    1026 AM CDT Fri Sep 14 2018

Areas affected...eastern North Carolina and extreme southeast
    Virginia

    Concerning...Tornado Watch 373...

    Valid 141526Z - 141730Z

The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 373 continues.

SUMMARY...Threat for isolated tornadoes will persist into the
afternoon, mainly over eastern North Carolina. A more limited threat
for a tornado or two also exists across extreme southeast Virginia.

DISCUSSION...Late this morning the center of Hurricane Florence was
located just inland over southeastern NC near Cape Fear. The storm
is forecast by the National Hurricane Center to move very slowly
west southwest through this afternoon. This will keep much of
eastern NC within the favorable northeast quadrant of the Hurricane
for a sustained threat of isolated tornadoes. Latest radar imagery
continues to show mini supercells embedded within the outer bands of
Florence from well offshore to near Morehead City northward to about
25 miles south of Elizabeth City moving west northwest. Instability
(though weak) is maximized in this region due to the very moist
onshore flow. Some breaks in clouds between bands might occur later
today, and could result in additional destabilization over eastern
NC where 0-1 km hodograph size is maximized. A more limited threat
for a tornado or two extends as far north as far southeast VA, but
given the forecast west southwest storm motion by the National
Hurricane Center and expected slow but gradual weakening, it is
unlikely that that the more substantial tornado threat will extend
any further north than the northern bound of tornado watch 373.
