    Mesoscale Discussion 1016
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
    0235 AM CDT Sun Jul 08 2018

Areas affected...Portions of North Dakota and northwest Minnesota

    Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 264...

    Valid 080735Z - 080900Z

The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 264
    continues.

SUMMARY...Strong/severe storms, primarily accompanied by gusty,
damaging winds, may persist downstream of Watch 264. Trends are
being monitored for possible new watch issuance. Such a watch would
    be needed around 3-330am CDT.

DISCUSSION...A small cluster of occasionally severe cells is lifting
northeast around 40 kt across central North Dakota this morning.
These cells appear to be focused by forward propagation within a
narrow buoyancy-gradient corridor along a surface front extending
into far northwest Minnesota. Nocturnal cooling and related
boundary-layer stabilization have fostered considerable convective
inhibition ahead of these cells. However, forced ascent along the
cold pool and residual steep lapse rates above the surface stable
layer continue to yield a few vigorous updrafts, and these cells may
remain capable of damaging gusts (due to the shallow nature of the
stable layer). As such, convective trends associated with this
cluster (as well as any new development downstream) are being
monitored for possible new watch issuance.
