Mesoscale Discussion 0553
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0146 PM CDT Mon May 28 2018
Areas affected...Northwest KS...Eastern CO
Concerning...Severe potential...Watch likely
Valid 281846Z - 281945Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...95 percent
SUMMARY...Severe threat will increase across the central High Plains
from northwest KS into eastern CO over the next few hours. Large
hail and a few tornadoes are possible.
DISCUSSION...Early-day convection that developed over southwest
NE/northwest KS has drifted east and is maturing into a healthy
corridor of supercells from Phillips County to northern Trego County
KS. This activity will maintain/enhance a well-defined boundary that
is draped into Kit Carson County CO. Deep convection should evolve
west along this boundary over the next few hours as convective
temperatures are breached. Strengthening mid-level flow ahead of the
upstream short-wave trough will ensure this activity grows upscale
into the evening hours. Supercells with large hail and tornadoes can
be expected with these storms. Tornado watch will be issued to
account for this scenario.
