Mesoscale Discussion 0549
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1114 PM CDT Sun May 27 2018
Areas affected...Western/central South Dakota
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 126...
Valid 280414Z - 280545Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 126
continues.
SUMMARY...Isolated severe hail and locally damaging wind potential
will continue to spread northward mainly in South Dakota areas
along/north of I-90 through late evening and early in the overnight.
Severe Thunderstorm Watch 126 continues until 07Z.
DISCUSSION...Numerous storm mergers have led to multiple
northward-moving linearly organized clusters across
southwest/south-central South Dakota late this evening. The
convective mode should limit larger hail magnitudes the remainder of
the night, although isolated bouts of marginally severe hail
(roughly 1" diameter) remain possible. Although inflow will continue
to become increasingly elevated owing to the stabilizing boundary
layer with temperatures cool through the 70s F, steep lapse rates
and relatively strong shear in the cloud-bearing layer will continue
to support semi-organized linear structures capable of wind damage,
but probably on an increasingly marginal/localized basis into the
overnight.
