Mesoscale Discussion 0611
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0344 PM CDT Fri Jun 01 2018
Areas affected...Western NC and parts of south-central VA
Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely
Valid 012044Z - 012315Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent
SUMMARY...Locally strong wind gusts are possible this afternoon to
the early evening across portions of western North Carolina and part
of south-central Virginia, with limited coverage of severe storms
precluding watch issuance.
DISCUSSION...Trends in visible satellite and radar imagery, and
lightning data showed storms have formed over the higher terrain of
western NC and southwest VA this afternoon. These storms are moving
to the east into an environment with steep low-level lapse rates.
Despite weak midlevel lapse rates and weak deep-layer shear limiting
overall storm organization, the steeper surface-3-km lapse rates
suggest locally strong/damaging wind gusts will be possible with the
stronger storms.
