• Netmail trying to talk DIRECTLY to destination

From Dmxrob@1:103/705 to All on Friday, April 05, 2019 18:24:04
For the life of me I cannot figure this out. I've searched every document, checked every config file. Either its blatantly obvious and I'm just missing it or ???

Sending Netmail to a user on fsxNet -- expect that Netmail will go to my Hub (21:ALL is routed to the fsxNet HUB), but it keeps trying to send directly (and failing). I've checked, double-checked and triple-checked that there is no direct setting whatsoever set for Netmail or the destination address or anything.

    Ideas where to search next?

What does your routing look like in echocfg's Linked Nodes (or sbbsecho.ini)? I stumbled
through the routing without much issue, luckily.

Crash or direct will defeat any default routing. What do you have the SCFG->Networks->FidoNet->NetMail Defaults to Crash/Direct settings set to?

do you have that destination system listed in your echocfg? if yes, what does that record look like? make sure you block out any passwords when/if you post it...

FTN network stuff is tricky at best -- but way better than it was back in the 80s and 90s. However, I have to admit I love the simplicity of QWK networking. It "just works". The older I get, even as an IT guy, I just want things in my personal life that "just work".

NetMail, yes (http://wiki.synchro.net/ref:qwknet). File echoes, no.

Good read. The transferring files between nodes and hubs part sounds interesting and I like the concept. I don't really make use of the FTN file echoes because its a lot of "noise and bits" I can do without. However, there are times I wish I could send someone a file and reading over this doc, this seems a pretty clear cut way of doing it. Will have to give it a try.

Going to have to dig into this FREQ thing as well... could be useful.

what "noise and bits" do you perceive in FTN file echos? there should not be anything other than the files being distributed and the TIC files for them... at the end, when the TIC processing is finished, the TIC is gone and the file should be in your filebase... if there's no TIC file, they won't be being distributed via their FDN...

if you are talking about file distribution areas you don't want, you can turn them off just like you can with message areas...

However, there are times I wish I could send someone a file and

Will have to give it a try.

file attaches are a GoodThing<tm>... especially since they travel in their raw binary form instead of an enlarged encoding format like UUencode, XXencode or MIME...

Going to have to dig into this FREQ thing as well... could be useful.

FREQs are also very useful in that you request the file from a remote system via a netmail-style message... when you deliver the message to that remote system (FREQs have to go direct) you pick your file up at that time...
