  • Synchronet BBS List Not Verifying

    Digital Man,

    Something appears to be up with the synchronet verify routine. I see the following on the SBBS list got "Gateway to the West":

    2019-03-20 No connect: 0
    Last verified on 2019-03-15 by sbbslist.js 1.51

    The domain is bbs.homelabber.net, which I know is working as I access it all the time and so does Fido. All ports are standard, though I do not offer the web services externally.

    Any thoughts?

    Your terminal server wasn't answering at the time of the attempted connection(s)? I see I can connect right this moment. And I see many other BBSes are being successfully verified every night. So I don't have any immediate thoughts as to what the issue could be.

    Do you know what time it tries to verify at? I can cross-reference my logs. I do have VM snapshots happening in the middle of the night, but that should not be taking anything offline.

    Do you know what time it tries to verify at?

    The last successful verification of that BBS was at "2019-03-15T07:41:23.919Z" (that's UTC), so about that same time every day I would expect.

    I can cross-reference my logs.
    I do have VM snapshots happening in the middle of the night, but that should not be taking anything offline.

    I checked all the logs, and this message appears to have popped up and becoming rather frequent....

    What hostname/ip does the script check from so I can narrow it down in the logs to see what is happening?

    The sbbslist verifier doesn't check SSH connections, so that's not me.

    Here is what I see happening, it looks like you are making it on. I didn't see any entry for the 22nd, however.

    I found the problem with verification:

    See your terminal service port numbers are blank strings (""), which was unexpected. So I updated my code to use default ports in that case, but I'm not sure how/why your ports became blank strings. A default port can/could be assumed by not specifying a port number (so-called 'undefined'), but an emptry string was not explicitly supported as indicating a "default port".

    Your older SBL messages (in the SYNCDATA echo) had actual port numbers specified, so something changed at some point in your local sbbslist.json file, I'm guessing.

    Thanks for catching it. I'm not sure either; I've looked at the JSON before, but never edited it outside of the editor.

    Shortly after I posted that to you, unfortunately, I lost my ESXi cluster, and my backups got corrupted. So it has been a fun few days trying to rebuild things. On one hand, learned some important lessons about backups and clustering I plan to put to good use - on the other hand, lost a lot of stuff.

    Live and learn and try again...
