One thing that's frustrated me ever since I started running a Synchronet BBS was the ability to set a WAV file to play when a connection happens. Of course, it's not that function itself that frustrates me, but the fact that in a time when exploit-seeking scripts connect to your BBS hundreds (or more) times a day, being able to set a connect sound is just a tease.
But I finally thought of the solution. On Windows-based systems at least, Synchronet allows you to trigger WAV files through Javascript. I immediately found the sound of most modem speed/protocol handshakes and wrote a quick bit of code to randomly choose one, inserting it into login.js at the point right after the user successfully logs in. (You could also trigger it in one of the welcome login[x].ans/asc screens if you don't want to mess with the main login script.)
I apologize if this is silly. But, I just thought there might be a few other SysOps out there who have wanted a notification sound that can avoid the nuisance connections falsely triggering it. This is one way Windows-systems can do that.
you might send a copy of that to DM
My code is slightly dirty, but maybe requesting a modification to the existing logon sound feature to set it to play after a connection successfully logs in would be in order.
So I'll formally make the suggestion here. Dev team, would it be possible to eventually add the option to play the configurable logon sound after a connection completes authentication, instead of only when all connections are made? The volume of bots and other scanners sadly makes a sound notification useless for informing you when actual users login.
Thanks!
i think something like this is a personal preference.
it's your command shell, edit it how you wish.
i dont want ANY sounds, and i have my bbs setup that way.

Six years into my return to BBSing, and it's only now that I finally get my first instance of MRO gainsaying something I've said. I finally feel like

never heard of you.
it was just me replying to your stupid post. dont think it is anything else. ---
A new "configurable logon sound" option would be easy to add. The existing sound file options are not for logon, they're for connection and disconnection.

It might be something SysOps enjoy, even if only for a short time. I put modem sounds in my logon script a week ago, and it's still not old. Silly nostalgia!

Modem sounds in the logon script? I think those would likely be heard
on the BBS system (the sysop would hear it). Back in the day, as a
sysop, I didn't really want to hear the modem answer every call (particularly if it was late at night). Hearing the modem sounds was
more useful to me as a user calling other BBSes than as a sysop.

I've seen Josh Ramsey post on Dove-Net here and there for a little while now..

As a user, definitely loved the modem sounds. As a sysop, I turned the modem speaker off, so it didn't disturb late at night. Was nice to listen, but impractical, as it would have needed 2 modem configurations and an event to swap them. Doable, but would have meant recycling the system twice a day for no other reason.
I'm starting to think I'm in the minority. I really thought more SysOps in the dial-up era liked hearing users connecting, at least when near their computers.

I ran Wildcat, and I actually did use multiple init strings for
different times of the day. I think there was some easy way to do it
from the main "waiting for callers" screen, like a hotkey or something. Once I had an external USR Sportster with a volume knob, that wasn't
even a problem anymore.
