Many people (including myself) keep an IRC client open most/all of the time check it periodically for interesting/directed discussion.

I am an irc novice. I was using the built-in synchronet "client" via telnet. I did not see any way to scroll back the conversation. So, I am wondering, if you keep that one open and are not actively watching it, how can you see any directed discussion that might have scrolled-off?

    Thanks!

There are several IRC programes you can use, I myself prefer hexchat and I run it on my Raspberry PI.
I have it running outwestbbs-bot on synchronet and outwestbbs irc channels. then I just VNC in and can read all that has happened everyday.

Use the scrollback buffer of your terminal client (e.g. Alt-B in SyncTERM)?

Most IRC users use dedicated clients however (e.g. mIRC on Windows) so you can IRC and BBS at the same time. :-)

I think an interesting side-effect of internet BBSing, at least for the sysop, is that you can set up pretty much as many nodes for your BBS as you want and be logged into the BBS multiple times. As the sysop, you could potentially be logged in and in IRC on one node and logged in on another node doing other stuff. But yeah, I'd prefer a dedicated IRC client.

Back in the day, I used mIRC so much that I ended up buying a registration code for it. I think mIRC's registration codes are always valid for all future versions.. I don't use IRC much anymore though.

I will sometimes connect to IRC using Adium on my Mac, and just leave it open. When I'm home from work or whatever, I might peek in to see if anyone was talking in #synchronet or whatever.

I also saw Blocktronics share a link to a Shooter Jennings interview on the Joe Rogan podcast in which he talked for several minutes about BBSes and IRC and stuff. I knew about the BCR Games server, but didn't realize he was also running an IRC server and other stuff. Logged in and checked it out today.
Sure enough, Shooter does pop in from time to time.

I also have mIRC registered. It doesn't cost much and you're right, once registered you get all updates as far as I'm aware. I used mIRC extesnively
in the 90's. I wrote one of the first scripts to use sockets when that
ability was added, around version 4.0 or something like that.
