Tonight, New Year's Eve, my wife, mother-in-law and I went to
Pizza by Alex for dinner. It was the first time eating there for
each of us, although my wife did have a pizza delivered from
there once and a second pizza that I went to pick up myself.
The two pizzas that we had were both the same. They were deep
dish with a bunch of ingredients. IIRC, we had ricotta, Canadian
bacon, green olives and artichokes. I'd guess that in all, the
pizza was about an inch and a half deep. That comes to about $25
for a 14 inch pizza, so it is not cheep, but it was possibly the
best pizza I've ever had.
As with most pizza places, you can customize your pizza pretty
much any way you want it. At Pizza by Alex, you can also do that
with pasta. They have several different pastas, each of which
can be ordered with any of five or so different sauces.
Tonight, I decided to get something other than pizza, so I
ordered the chicken parmigiana. My wife ordered linguine with
clams and my m-i-l ordered a 12 inch thin crust pizza with
artichokes, green and black olives and ricotta. Normally, I'd
order veal parmigiana, but there was no veal on the menu. My
wife also ordered a dinner salad while my m-i-l and I each had
the minestrone soup. Finally, my wife and I each had flan for
dessert.
My m-i-l and I both thought the soup was very good. My wife
thought the same of her salad.
My chicken parmigiana was quite good. The portion of chicken was
just about perfect for me. It came with way more spaghetti than
I could eat. My wife tasted the chicken and also liked it.
My wife thought her linguine was very good too. I tried one of
her clams and concurred.
The only real problem with the meal is that when I ordered the
pizza for my m-i-l, the waitress misunderstood me and so the
pizza came with anchovies instead of artichokes. When I pointed
this out, they took the pizza back, added the artichokes and
left the anchovies on. This was fine by me as I kind of like
anchovies. My m-i-l also seemed to like them. As with the other
two pizzas, this one was excellent.
We arrived a little after 5 PM. When we got there, we were the
only patrons eating inside. There was another party picking up a
to go order. By the time we left, there were three or four other
parties eating there. The dining room is quite nice and, while
not large, it had room for several more parties.
Pizza by Alex is located at 103 S First Street, in the same
strip as a furniture store. It is across First Street from
Burger King (or "Burge" if you go by the lit up letters of their
sign), across Main Street from Taco Bell and caddy corner to
Quik Trip. It scored a mediocre 86 in it's restaurant
inspection.
In short, I highly recommend the restaurant.
