From Dale Barnes@1:1/133 to ALL on Wednesday, November 06, 2019 20:28:41
As I continue to clean up the old code and convert most of it to something I feel is improved....The question needs to be asked:

Other than windows and Linux, is there really any other platforms to really consider? I know there are many to choose from but which ones really make since for this hobby?

    Just thought I would ask

So to ask the question again. What if any platforms are really needed outside of windows/Linux? Also any feedback if you want GUI or just pure text based console?

If I saw a linux console version I would open it up very quickly for a
look and try it out. My BBS runs in a linux console without any support
for the desktop. It runs in a linode.

I don't have anything against a GUI either and might just setup a GUI
version as a point on my desktop at home here for quick and easy access
to my node if there was such a thing.

    Ttyl :-),

Personally I think that covers it. All I would want is the Linux
    version.

Also any feedback if you want GUI or just pure text based
    console?

Not sure of the correct term, maybe "TUI"? Not strictly just
"text" but with lines/borders, etc... like what the old DOS
version looked like would suit me fine. Maybe those characters
are called "high ASCII" or "ANSI"?

    Thanks!

Yep, looking for a decent lib for TUI at the moment so if I go text based but I
am leaning toward GUI but need to research a bit more.

What language are you writing the 1.2x and the new platform in?

Still pascal. Too old to change at this point. I do a bit of C# but everything I have written and worked in has been pascal.

The goal for me is to get the old DOS system cleaned up and able to work in other platforms if possible. The databases used in IM are well, old. I was going to use SQLITE but to find a working DOS version was going to take quite a
bit of work and not sure if it was going to be worth the effort. I have the 3.x barely working but it needs some work (ok lots of work).

Was going to kick the TurboPascal Database tool box out of IM and go with BFiler which is used in my WinToss package with great success and has a windows
flavor and I know Nick is working on the Linux flavor so might be able to go that route. Was going to review InterBase as I can leverage it for any platform but DOS.

So for those that love to play with so many systems, do you really care what database I use and not be the same depending on the platform you choose? May help me get pass the "which database I should use". Unless your ok with Paradox? (just kidding).

You know, if you switched to FreePascal, you could write a Linux, POS2/ Windows, DOS and MacOS port of the same code ;) that would be awesome :) And if you included native WINServer support, even more so :)

LOL, yes but both FreePascal and Delphi are both based Pascal. :)

I have FreePascal and playing with it but I can also generate a WIndows/OSX/IOS/ANDROID/LINUX from Delphi as well.

That is true. I have the OS/2 Patch now and will attempt to patch compiler and
    see what it does.
