I'm familiar with POCSAG as a user and scanner monitor. The fire service uses it for alerting members to incidents, and I have a pager for that. I can see value in a local pager for ham use, especially as I am not always able to leave a rig running.

Yep, most people want to know a Windows option. Linux users tend to know how to use Google and their package manager. :D

But I still want a hardware pager ;)

I can see one being useful. :) Well, I do have a hardware pager, but it's tuned to 149 (roughly) MHz and gets fire service pages. Oh, and it's not mine, it belongs to the fire service. :D

The system I described is for emergency service use, it's internal to the emergency services - i.e. between dispatch and members, with some degree of member to member messaging possible. From what I understand, there's almost 200 transmitters spread across the state, simulcasting the traffic on the same frequency, so my pager works anywhere within the state.

That's always a good strategy. I had a look at the AlphaPOC site and saw some nice options. Now if I can get a local POCSAG paging system in the house working, and have it programmable, so I can use scripts to send customised pages, it would be very useful to me. :)

It is also quit OK ... (do not confuse with DM-5R that does not support DMR Tier II and hence is useless)

They are using RF transmitters.

Sounds like the local repeaters... ;-) I turn the mobile on most of the time when I'm in between job sites (I work IT for a school district) and most of the
time it's quiet. Sometimes I'll key up but I know if others are scanning they might miss me too. I always wonder if no one is there or if everyone is like me
and waiting to see if someone ELSE is there. :-)

My idea of "radiosport" is not sitting around racking up points in a contest, but something more like ARDF. :) I do hope we can get more younger hams, there's a lot of knowledge and experience in our club that needs to be passed on, before it's too late.

I understand this is not the same for USA and Japan.

I did my exam 3 years ago ... but at least I could motivate a young (20 year old) colleague to do the test as well.

DMR is the cheapest of the DV modes to get into, as there's a few
budget priced radios around that apparently work reasonably well. I

Well I'm 51, but only got into this about 2 or 3 years ago. :-) There
are some around here younger, but most are older than me. :-) Several
of them are ex-military as well.

I'm 50 and the vast majority of hams in the local club are older than

I don't knock the guys that just want to connect for contests, but that's
not what interests me either. :-)

My wife and I used to Geocache a lot - and did it a lot with friends.
I think it would have been cool to have our radios back in those days... :-)

We use TYT now, and yeah I remember now looking at the MD380/390
some time back. Not having an antenna in the air at home doesn't
help any. :-)

39 here, been licensed since I was 13 and EVERYONE was older than I was back then. :) Packet Radio was my favorite mode, used to run a dialup BBS too until the internet happened.
