From MICHAEL LOO@1:123/140 to NANCY BACKUS on Monday, May 13, 2019 14:16:56
Funny thing was that I originally appended a moist pear
cake with vegetable oil instead of solid shortening to
the original post but then replaced it with a more
    topical recipe.

are like that. Both are bright; Glen is educated and has
had a number of productive careers; Kevin is trained in
the school of Hard Knocks and has had a disastrous life
    path. Both interesting.
    I've gathered as much.... :)

    One could write well-selling biographies
about them. Not novels about them, people
would think the stories too improbable.

I found some soul mates of a sort over the years... but never quite a
twin separated at birth sort... :)
I've had a few people who wanted to be such; also
a couple evil twins who looked very much like me,
one of whom also kind of played the violin.
Probably confusing some susceptible sorts... ;0

At rehearsal the other day some very cute young cellist
greeted me - Kanh! I looked blankly at her. You're not
Kanh? she asked. I looked puzzled and shook my head. I
don't look remotely like Kanh, who is Vietnamese, a
decade younger than me, and has still-black hair. Well, he
is an excellent musician, and I noted that I hadn't heard
anything so flattering since someone not apparently able
to tell the difference between a violin and a cello asked
    if I was Yo-Yo Ma, .

    Or music, even.... ;)
    Gasp.
I know... can you believe it...!? ;)
Oh, the horror. The trumpet player for Fiddler was
the contractor I worked for at North Shore Music
Theatre back in the last millennium. We were kind
of surprised to see each other. He has done pretty
well for himself in the business but has not got
the financial success someone of his eminence in
another field might have achieved, i.e., he's not
a multimillionaire or in Englewood or Otisville.
Not everyone aspires to climb any higher.... ;) Sounds like at least it
was a good meeting for the two of you... :)

It was a pretty fun blast from the past.

So this last gig I did had a second bass whom I
hadn't seen in 48! years. We caught up, and his
parting remark was that we should not let it be
another 50 years before we saw each other again.

Small enough quantities, probably none at all... :)
    I know that zinc supplements are generally gluconate;
the oxide is probably a lot less soluble so even less
    likely to cause trouble.
    I suppose. :)
The Internet says that it is in fact used as a
    supplement in breakfast cereal.
    The oxide, or the gluconate....?

Both, but it was the oxide that was surprising.
Gluconate is pretty soluble, so you need less of
it, but I guess it's also more expensive.

    What raisin crisis...?
Read the article - it was in the Times a week
or so ago and discusses the relations between
the Sun-Maid company and the "raisin mafia,"
which has upset the dried fruit market lately.
Do you have a tin yurl for it...? It hasn't seemed to do anything
    noticeable at Wegmans, anyway.... :)

I read tin yurt ... I don't have tin anything.

It's been shown that the economic booms promised by
proponents of new zillion-dollar sports stadiums just
don't happen. Baseball comes closer to breakeven, but
    even it's not significant.
So I've observed over the years...
And still the taxpayers don't learn.
    Or don't pay attention....

By the news coverage whenever there's a project of
this sort, lots of people are paying attention.
It's just that they're buying the bill of goods
sold by governmental and quasi-governmental entities,
    similarly with the lottery commissions.

... Sure money can't buy happiness, but it can buy bacon.

I just had some excellent porky unsmoked uncured
bacon, and I was happy. Until I discovered that
it was from Smithfield (I try to avoid supporting
the Red Chinese economy more than I have to).

    Ginger-spiced pear upside down cake
    categories: dessert, vegan
    yield: 1

    h - For the Pears
2 sm pears, peeled, cored, 1/4" wedges
    1/4 c organic brown sugar
    1/4 c coconut oil
2 ts ground ginger (more or less, tt)
    h - For the Cake
    3/4 c plus 2 Tb almond milk
    1 ts apple cider vinegar
    1 c oat flour
    1 c unbleached cake flour (or gluten-free a/p flour)
    1 1/2 ts baking powder
    1/2 ts baking soda
    1/4 ts sea salt
    1/2 ts ground cinnamon
    1 1/2 ts ground ginger
    1 pn ground cloves
    2 ts vanilla
    3 Tb unsweetened applesauce
    5 fl maple syrup
    2 Tb brown sugar
    3 Tb coconut oil, melted

Oven at 350F. Line the outside [?] of a 9" springform
pan with foil. Spray the inside of the pan with cooking
    spray.

Combine the almond milk with the vinegar. Set aside to
    curdle.

Cream together the coconut oil, brown sugar, and ginger
until light and fluffy. Spread this mixture on the
bottom of the pan. Arrange the pear slices on top in a
circular formation with the pointy side towards the
middle of the pan. Set aside

Whisk together the flours, baking powder, baking soda,
salt, and spices. Add the vanilla, applesauce, syrup,
brown sugar, and coconut oil to the almond milk. Pour
the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir
to combine. Pour the cake batter into the pan with the
pears and bake for 40 to 45 min. Allow the cake to cool
in the pan for 15 min. Take the sides off of the pan
and place a plate over the cake and carefully flip
it over. Remove the bottom of the pan and serve.

Mark Twain is supposed to have said something like that, to the effect
of truth being stranger than fiction.... I have the "quote" in a tagline

Said quite dead-pan, no doubt... :) He had a very good point there...
