Recipes are on purpose - and more-or-less germane to the post (or some part of it) in a nod to our seldom heard from "eat" Burton Fordowicz.

We heard from Burt the other day. He and Shirley are still hanging in
there. It turns out that he called us in a panic because his cell phone
got 17 calls from "Dale Shipp". He then tried to call us back, but
since we had not yet gotten up, we only got the voice mails. I'm not
sure what sort of spam calls he was getting, but I know that they were
not from me. After we finally connected, Gail and I chatted with the
two of them for about 45 minutes.

BTW-- I have gotten calls on my home phone from "Dale Shipp" and even displaying my actual phone number, but only once or twice.

    Title: Galab Jamuns (Northern India)
Categories: Bread, Harned 1994, Indian, Side dish
    Yield: 12 servings

    4 c Sugar
    4 c ;Water
    3 Cardamom pods
    2 c Nonfat dry milk
    1 c Biscuit mix
    1/2 c Liquid milk
2 tb Melted butter or margarine
    Vegetable oil for frying

Combine sugar and water in a pan and stir to dissolve. Crush
cardamom and add it to the syrup. Bring to a boil, cook 15 to 20
minutes or until mixture is syrupy, then remove from heat. Remove
about a quarter of the syrup to another smaller pan and keep that at
    a simmer.

Meanwhile, combine dry milk, biscuit mix, milk and melted butter.
Grease hands and palms and shape the milk mixture into balls less
than 1" in diameter. Heat about 3" of vegetable oil in a pan. Add 1
ball - it shouldn't crackle, but should make small bubbles in the
oil. If the heat is right, cook remaining balls in the oil, a few at
a time. Cook 6 to 8 minutes, or until light brown (they will
expand). Remove them from the oil with a slotted spoon.

Place the fried balls in the syrup that you've set aside in the
smaller pan. Bring to a boil, then remove the balls and put in the
large pot of syrup. Keep adding fried balls to small pan, then
transfer to large pan of syrup. Discard the syrup left in the small
pan. Discard cardamom pods before serving.

Serve chilled or at room temperature. Serve in a small bowl with the
    syrup.

Yield: About 24, or 12 servings.

The marketroids are very clever and use the spoofing of phone numbers to
skirt the Do Not Call lists. Used to be - if you were on the Do Not Call registry (I am - on every verion I could find) and you got junk/robot/ telemarketer calls you could rat-out the number to the Feds and they
would come down on the miscreants. With spoofed numbers it does no good
to turn stuff over to the Feral Gummint because nothing leads back to
the dipsticks who are bothering you.

My policy is - I do not answer calls from numbers I do not recognise.
If at home I let the French butler on my answering machine screen the
unknown callers. On the cell - I hit the reject icon if I don't recognise
the number/name. If it's a legit call from someone I should talk to or
they have some real, non sales/scam/promotion purpose they will call
    back - usually right away.

That policy may be obsolete - obviously they are able to spoof names
that are recognisable ..... probably by accessing people's phone books
on their cell phones. Eeeeeewwwwww the game just gets more and more
    difficult.

While he was still in panic mode, he called here, just as we were
leaving the house for an appointment... I did reassure him that as far
as I knew you were ok.... I hadn't realized how many calls he'd gotten supposedly from you, or that they were all that same morning... After he
got off the phone from talking with you, he called me back (just before
I was going to check back in with him, having gotten back home myself),
and was very relieved that you were ok... I offered potential
transportation for them to the picnic, but I don't think they are likely
to take me up on it... we shall see... :)

BTW-- I have gotten calls on my home phone from "Dale Shipp" and even displaying my actual phone number, but only once or twice.

Yeah, we've had the same, from "Backus Richard" and our own phone
    number... totally mind-boggling.... :)
