    And milk is milk AFAICS.

A lot depends on how it is handled... sitting out at warmer temps gives
an off-taste to the milk, as well as letting it spoil more quickly....

ALDI milk (eggs, too) is in a reach-in cooler. Not in an open gondola
as is common with many stupormarkups.

As is Wegmans milk and eggs... But even when it was more open, they were keeping their milk better than at other supermarkets...

We don't eat a lot of bread either.... and have had similar
long-lasting results with Wegmans' breads... :)

As I don't have a Wegmans' in range (yet) I cannot compare.

True... But it is what I have for comparisons... ;)

When K-Mart bought Sears, locks, stock and debt load I was convinced
they had stepped in it with golf spikes. Sears is dragging K-Mart more near to the oubliette with each passing struggle. Our local K-mart and Sears seem to be doing well - stores clean and well-stocked. But,
there are not enough similar examples in the chain to save the black
hole that the morass of debt has become.

They've both been doing well enough here, as well... although the
K-Marts have been shutting down here, leaving just Sears...

Lum's was a hang-out back in the day. The local HoJo franchise
restaurants were co-owned by a school-mate's family. I used to like the AYCE deep fried rubber bands and/or fish on Wednesday and Friday. And
the rest of the menu was pretty decent too. And nearly every HoJo I was
in - locally, near-by or at a travel plaza on the Pennsy Pike was the same.

I have good (if mostly vague now) memories of HoJo's.. yes, the clams especially, and that the food in general was good....

    ttyl neb

... Sadly, the world will always have more bad restaurants than good.

What I miss around here is the Used Bread Stores .... when Hostess/Wonder
took the gas pipe all of the Wonder and Butternut Bread outlet stores
closed. I finally located an outlet store on the near west side of my
corner of the Great American Outback and stopped to get some "last day
of sale" (really marked waaaaaaay down) bread to use for stuffing. I was
told by the clerk/manager when I was checking out that her store was the
*only* example in Illinois. When I asked "Including Chicago?" she said TastyKake was looking at some "downstate" locations but noting in Cook
    county or the collar counties.

Illinois stores have been shuttering about equally. Leaving more K-Marts
than Sears .... of curse K-Mart had more boxes than Sears - which was
mostly seen anchoring a maul somewhere.

Oddly, I can't remember ever having had the I scream at HoJo. My favorite
thing that was not seafood was the hot beef sammich.
