In which case there's nothing to be done and pets
and friends and relations, they're collateral damage.
I refuse to rule out situations in which suicide is
excusable or at least the solution that causes the
    least pain to others.
There are times, but in those cases I'd be making sure the animals at
    least didn't suffer.

One hopes you don't find yourself in that
    situation.

One thing this macabre discussion doesn't take
into account is that people with pets most likely
will care about them and their fate and make some
kind of plan - and also that people with pets most
likely don't get to that level of despondency in
the first place (that being a lot of what pets are
    good for).

Speaking of which, did you see that some guy was
prosecuted for leaving behind a pet fish when he was
evicted from his apartment? The case was dropped,
    and there's a happy ending - According to nbcnews.com,
The Fish Room has been treating the fish's disease
and expects it to make a full recovery, although
Edwards [apparently some veterinary type] said it's
hard to tell when it will be 100 percent healthy
because of how severe the case was. Once the
fish does recover, officials will most likely find
    a new home for it.
Wow, was that April 1 or what?

    We can but hope.
    Oh, for sure.
But not hold out too much?
Eh, he's not a liar, and if he said something happened,
    chances are it did.
    The question is what?

Something that corresponds in his head largely
    to what actually happened.

When he was at his most psychotic, what he said
clearly didn't have much to do with what was
actually going on inside or outside his head,
but it seems his touch on reality is much better
now; perhaps not so good as yours or mine (well,
we guess, anyway), but functioning at a basic
    nonfatal level.

I had a spirited conversation with a committed small
d democrat and possibly a big D Democrat about that
very issue today. As I've said, the Catholic formula
for being a bishop cuts to the meat of the issue. In
the installation ritual, the candidate must say "nolo
episcopari" - meaning, I really don't want the job.
That's the way I feel would be the only way of
    getting sane, honest politicians.

Get someone who takes the job "because somebody has to do it"?

That hasn't happened to speak of since Eisenhower.

People who want power are most often those who ought to have the
    least of it.

    That problem has been noted.

Weird menschen of course are universal.
Everyone is unter in some way.
Or at least not sure of where they are. Confused Menschen are universal.
    I take it you've met a few?
    More than my share.

I've known two wealthy successful would-be
Ubermenschen who turned themselves into Frauen.

This isn't as wrong as some.
    Pretty darned wrong, though.
Speaking of confused Menschen; this was written by a confused cook.

I made aloo chhole for my Thursday dinner party.
Tried to imagine the potatoes replaced by
zucchini. Had to have my imagination washed out
    with soap.

Speaking of wrong. Today's dinner was spinach with
goat cheese salad, murgh in paneer sauce with basmati,
and a Bisquick shortcake with ricotta. A truly wwtt
meal, but one says, eh, that's the airlines for you.
The salad sounds fine if you do dairy, but a bisquick shortcake? No.
    Just no.

United used to have a contract with Eli's Cheesecake,
but when that company got famous and decided to charge
the airline a fee, we ended up getting some no-name
product perhaps from Costco (it wasn't actually that
bad); now, the standards have started to slip and
with no one in particular to blame, so I'm envisioning
a patch of bumpy ride for the company and its passengers.

I hate to say it, but it's not outside the realm of possibility.

That's the general idea. People find a way to take care of those
    dependent on them.

Wow, was that April 1 or what?

I missed that one. Just as well. It was a nasty thing to do to a
    fish of course.

I have a friend who's schizophrenic. He's medicated and generally
has a pretty good grasp on reality. He pays attention to baseball
    scores and standings at least.

    Not that I can recall.

People who want power are most often those who ought to have the

The problem is getting those who don't want it to run.

Or at least not sure of where they are. Confused Menschen

I've known two wealthy successful would-be

I've known folks who switched in both directions. Doing that
actually is a means to end confusion for some people.
