I usually go for the Gulf shrimp when available. You're never
certain with those farmed ones from Asia of exactly what went into
    them.

I'd not buy the Asian ones, either.... I get the frozen bags of shrimp
either cooked or uncooked at Wegmans.... they are careful of where they
    get theirs....

farm fed in various unsanitary ways. Now we only get wild
    caught Gulf shrimp from Wegmans.
    What's your stance on tilapia?

Serve with a large helping of nope, Nope and NOPE. I've bought some
that was prepared from the Kosher case, because I could trust the
source, but otherwise it's a no go. Swai either.

I'm sure that the tilapia and swai at Wegmans are safe enough, but I
decided I didn't really like the taste or texture of them.... so I don't
buy either one.... Turbot, if I see it, I'll get gladly.... and will
get the salmon and trout from Wegmans... :)

Both. The one I generally shop in is too, but their personnel
stay around for years and years.

    around...

    Hi Ruth,

Connecticut doesn't have any teams of their own, I take
    it.... :)

None at all other than minor league and universities. Our only professional team, the Whalers, upped sticks for South
    Carolina and became the Hurricanes.

Wrong Carolina--they're now in Raleigh, which, last time I looked,
was in North Carolina. (G) This past season they played some games
    wearing

Shows how little attention I pay to ice hockey!

It's not as popular a sport as baseball or football in the States. OTOH,
those two aren't as popular as hockey in Canada.

the old green/white Whaler's uniforms. Don't know if it helped them
or not but they made it thru to the conference round of the
Stanley Cup play offs before being eliminated. Took out the 2018 Cup
    champions in the first round.

Their old uniforms are still sold fan gear websites, and I'm told
they sell better now than they did while the team was still wearing
them. They kinda stank when they played in Hartford, so it's
    probably a nostalgia thing.

They're still not the team I follow but they're the team that gets
talked about in the local sports segments. Never been to one of their games--ought to go some time when they're playing Buffalo and wear a
Jeff Skinner (one of the young hot shots for the Canes, traded to the
Sabres a few years ago, still a hot shot) jersey. At least then I could
check and see if they sell garlic fries--haven't had any since we left
HI. They were, AFAIK, only sold at UH games.

    Hi Ruth,

Hopefully your internet is working again. I lost my Fido years ago (ehen
Steve was in Korea) when lightning hit the building where the guy I
pointed from lived. He had no protection for his stuff so it all fried.
It took a couple of months and switching to another source before I got

We wouldn't get the corn potato tots because of Steve's allergy, even if
we were into such things. Broccoli potato tots don't really sound that appealing either. The whole concept sounds like an idea that should have
been left in the suggestion box. (G)

Hopefully your internet is working again. I lost my Fido years ago
    (ehen
Steve was in Korea) when lightning hit the building where the guy I
pointed from lived. He had no protection for his stuff so it all
    fried.
It took a couple of months and switching to another source before I
    got
    it back.

Went back up on Monday, three days after the original repair date.

I'm a sweet potato fries person too. The Birdseye corn potato
    tots
aren't horrible. The broccoli ones are less successful. I
    think
they're aimed at getting kids to eat more vegetables.

We wouldn't get the corn potato tots because of Steve's allergy,
    even if
we were into such things. Broccoli potato tots don't really sound
    that
appealing either. The whole concept sounds like an idea that should
    have
been left in the suggestion box. (G)

Desperate parents will try just about anything.

Ting is being put in, in WF but we probably won't tie into it. Rather

Probably so, especially if they don't know it's turnip. Dips are also
good for getting kids to eat veggies, especially raw ones. One family in
our LG at church uses ranch dressing for a dip--works if you like ranch.

Replying from the Pond 10 Sept at about 9:40pm....

We're even losing a Whole Foods. (sigh)
Not enough people there able to raise enough money to shop
there...? (G) But it is nice to have something to check

I refer to my area as Jamaica North sometimes. There are tons of Jamaican immigrants here.

And all probably glad they were there, instead of Jamaica, last week.
True, the hurricane pretty much spared that island, but there was
    enough
wind and rain in the area that they probably got a fair amount.

My snowbird friends were glad to be up here too instead of Florida.

I'm not a mayo fan under any circumstances, but will use hummus
    instead.

I'd rather have the mayo in some things, it's more of a neutral
    flavor.

Exactly. Sandwiches are often bland, at least to me.

Have to take your word on that; there isn't much of a Jamaican

    Hi Ruth,

I refer to my area as Jamaica North sometimes. There are tons
of > RH> Jamaican immigrants here.

There was a Jamaican food truck at the (local) Friday Night on White
event this past Friday. Steve brought home some chicken, rice and a
plantain (he'd had the other ones) and yes, there was a good bit of heat

    or two.

I've been known to slug down a TB of Who Flung Foo at a clip before
now. It works and it's already here.

The question is, then, are you using it as a sinus clearer?

I wore a coat and gloves to go tag saling this morning. It
    was in
the 80s one day this week and we had frost this morning.

Raleigh hit 100 on Thrusday, not even 70 on Saturday. Today we got
    to 81
but the rest of the week is to be in the lower 70s. Good fall
    weather,
have to see if I need to get any pumpkin to put in the freezer this year.

Pumpkin spice on the other hand, you can leave in the store? (LOL)

Agreed, but we have to suffer thru this season before we get to the
chocolate and mint season. I do have to check my freezer--see if we have
any frozen pumpkin. it's almost time to make my annual birthday cake
    pumpkin roll.

    Indeed... :)

The closer it gets to free, the happier I be! And I'll buy anything
if the store is paying me to haul it out the door.

That is a nice incentive, to be sure... and you do have plenty of places
to donate anything you'd not be likely to use, even for free... :)

Exactly... :) You only have it in your own fragile wetware

And a lot of trial and error. It's hard to transfer visuals sometimes.
True.... I'm not that great an artist myself... :)

I can do it OK as long as there's a camera involved. :-)

    That makes it easier.... ;)

snow. It won't stick but ... snow.

We've had frost, but no snow. Hopefully we won't get any this
    winter,
but we usually do, at least once. Last winter our worst snow was in
December, closed church on our turn to cook for LG. We had lots of
turkey soup fixin's that have been eaten over the past few months.
    (G)

We had snow flurries on Tuesday. It didn't stick. I've been using
my oven to cook because it's too darned cold out.

No fun. We had a branch hit the corner of the house where our
    master
closet is on halloween but it didn't do any damage. Small-ish
    branch,
not the whole tree, thankfully. Some areas did lose power for a day
    or
    so; we kept ours.

It had better stay up for the rest of the winter, now that hurricane
    season is deadsville.

I even tried a chichi specialty coffee place with nutsy
    prices. Verdict? Meh.

In your opinion--if you were 30 years younger, you might
    think it
    to be great coffee. (G)

I wouldn't know as much about coffee.

And at that time in your life, you might think it pretty good
    coffee.

Considering what I was swilling in college, it would be an
    improvement.

Probably not that; it's one form we don't care for
    and would
rather see the pumpkin in something better tasting.

Pancakes? Pumpkin batter pancakes sound good right
    now.

Steve might, but I don't do pancakes. Too tempting to be
    heavy
    handed with the maple syrup. Meanwhile, the pie is history;
the roll is cooling in the fridge.

Pumpkin pancakes with cranberry sauce???? (LOL)

    I'll pass on that.

With leftover turkey? It might work.

Does your church have a take some/leave some area? They're
    not a bad
idea. I wouldn't leave open pet food, but spare cans are OK.

No, we don't have that.... at one time we collected food for a

We have a church clothes closet where people can donate things. The
food drop all goes to a local food bank.

    Hi Ruth,

but we usually do, at least once. Last winter our worst snow was in December, closed church on our turn to cook for LG. We had lots of turkey soup fixin's that have been eaten over the past few months.

We had rain (heard there were some flurries but I didn't see any) on
Tuesday. I did top of the stove cooking, potato-leek soup and braised
lamb shanks. The soup was a new to us recipe--a keeper but we may add
some sort of meat to it next time. It called for chicken stock but we
used some stock I'd made from smoked turkey which made it better and got
us thinking about using a ham bone, some other version of pork or smoked
    turkey in it.

It had better stay up for the rest of the winter, now that hurricane season is deadsville.

Hopefully we'll keep power on. Push comes to shove, we've got the camper
we can hole up in or just cook, depending on how long it looks like
we'll be in the dark. House is heated with gas but kitchen stove is
electric. We do have a small generator that would be good for keeping
the freezer going, maybe fridge also.

I even tried a chichi specialty coffee place with nutsy

I'll take your word for it; I was a tea drinker in college and still am.
    (G)

Only part of that that sounds appealing is the turkey. Give it to me
with some dressing and gravy, then you can have all the pumpkin pancakes
    with cranberry sauce you want.
