We talk about crisp, crunchy, hard, tough,
and so on, with greater or lesser differences
among them (I listed those in order of
    desirability to me).
True... and they might well differ in how they are perceived by what is
being eaten... Some instances of tough might be seen as chewy depending
on the food in question, for instance... :)

Exactly - it depends on the eater's preloaded
ideas about the food in question. What's tender as
a steak would be unbearably chewy as a custard.

    Bonnie's recently baked
cookies were hard and tough, so we analyzed
the changes to be made in the recipe - I
suggested butter instead of oil and rolling
the dough out thin; also a couple other things
upon which we decided to forget that recipe
and go with something tried and true, like
    Elevator lady spice cookies
Make too many changes, and one might as well go for a better or at least different recipe... :)

Yeah, that was the whole point.

Yeah. Ramona, California. As of last time I
On proofreading this I read Roman, Catholic.
    Sigh. Similar enough.......
Yeah, maybe. Actually, a lot of evangelicals
and a bunch of Mormons around there. Not a Jew
in sight, and the Cathies are all Hispanics.
So the most of them wouldn't be too pleased with your misread....

I doubt they'd care, except some of the Mormons,
whom I don't come into much contact with, as my
forays into town are basically to the wineries
and two of the beer bars.

Sort of. As with many people I know, she's good
at making up stuff that she didn't catch in the
first place. Unfortunately, she's not that
great at filtering out what doesn't make sense.
That can be a problem... So she'd not necessarily catch when she should
    ask for clarifications, then... ;)

    Oh, no.

Speaking of some effort, it'll take me some
effort to figure this out at all.
Which, the actual seeing, or the being able to do anything about the issues thereof....?
    Both, to some degree.
Hopefully you will get it figured out well... :)
... Q: What did the Gingerbread Man put on his bed? A: A cookie sheet.

    Insulated, I hope.

I asked about the difference between rap and hip-hop.
I didn't get a straight answer, and half of the
terminology they used I had no idea what it meant.
They're speaking a sublanguage which might as well be foreign... and
they probably thought they /had/ given you a straight answer..... ;)

Well, maybe, but a couple of the participants
in the conversation other than those with a
current academic interest in the subject admitted
to being flummoxed by the discussion as well.

What's to say that we don't already?

    Pate a biscuit
    categories: French, pastry
makes: 60 puffs or about 12 ladyfingers

    6 egg yolks
    1/2 c sugar
    2 1/2 ts vanilla
    1 Tb honey
    1 1/2 c cake flour, sifted
    6 egg whites
    3/4 ts cream of tartar
    1/4 c sugar

    Oven at 400F.

Butter and flour 2 large insulated baking sheets, or else
butter and flour 2 large pieces of uncoated cardboard placed
    over baking sheets.

Beat yolks and 1/2 c sugar until thick and lemon-colored.
Add vanilla and honey. Beat until thick again. Sift flour
over mixture and set aside without mixing in the flour.

Beat egg whites with cream of tartar to soft peaks. Gradually
beat in sugar until stiff peaks form.

Add 1/3 of the egg whites to the yolk and flour and fold until
all flour and egg whites are incorporated.

Fold in the rest of the egg whites. Scoop gently into a pastry
bag fitted with a #6 (1/2") round tip and pipe 60 1" disks or
12 lengths onto prepared sheets, at least 1" apart. Bake 10-15
min or until light golden and springy. Put baking sheets on
    wire racks and cool.
