• 990 Quick Fondue

From MICHAEL LOO@1:123/140 to KURT WEISKE on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 15:14:08
I wanted to make something quick and fun for Valentine's day, my wife was stuck on the road for 3 hours (a normally 1 hour drive)

That's brutal. How far is that in miles?

Luckily, I have a grocery store with a wonderful cheese assortment and
    sterno fuel 5 minutes away...

It's great to have a grocery that close. My
life requires a store within walking or public
trans distance, and that has put certain
    limitations on things.

    1/3 pound Gruyere cheese
    1/3 pound Gouda cheese
    1/3 pound Fontina cheese

Was that what was in the house? I'd use all
Gruyere or at least less of the milder cheeses.
Of course, your way might make a smooth product
more easily. For me, texture is secondary, flavor
more important - I needed to get the most bang
for my buck for the lactase pills.

1 cup dry white wine (I used Sauvignon Blanc)
    2 tbsp corn starch
    pinch of nutmeg
    pinch of cracked black pepper
    Loaf of french bread
    Cherry tomatoes

I wonder if one could make an okay lower
carb version without any flour or cornstarch.
I know that the oil would tend to separate,
    but is that that important.

    1. Grate the cheese, coat with the corn starch.
Heat the wine and pepper to a simmer in a pot, slowly add mixed cheese one handful at a time. Transfer to that fondue pot you bought at the thrift
store for $5 and have never used.

The sad thing is that when I came of age and
had use for a fondue set, it cost less than
$5 for the pot, fuel, and forks all in a nice
package. I never bought one myself but had
girlfriends who had fondue pots, yogurt makers,
all those cool but now forgotten '60s and '70s
applances. Of course, being grossly lactose
intolerant, I didn't do that much dairy cooking
(much more now, now that the condition has
    somewhat abated).

    ... Would anybody want it?

    Possibly.

Question is would anybody want this, which refers
to the previous post. Not on Valentine's, probably.
Unless both of you had one.

Shake everything but the olives together with ice in
a shaker. Strain the mixture into a martini glass.
Garnish with the garlic-stuffed olives and serve.
