Saw her at ReStore today, decision to retire was made rather
abruptly. She may come back in the summer but is dealing with
knee problems also. Gave her the contact info for my doctor.
Ah. So it'll depend on how her knee turns out, whether she'll
be able to do the prep for, and the selling at, the market... :)
Hopefully your doctor will be useful to her.... :)
Hope so, the one she saw was less than useful. Mine will be a lot
better, based on my experience with him.
    Hopefully... :)

I'll probably e-mail her in 2 or 3 weeks, find out if she's seen the doctor yet, and his diagnosis.

And hopefully it won't take too long for her to get in to see him...

All clear, had the pre-op appointment, picked up a med he wants
me to start before surgery. It's getting closer...........
With a clear path to it... all good....
Yes, and I started the one pre-op med last night.
Final stretch... ;) I asked for prayers for you today at
    church... :)

Thanks, all prayers will help. One couple from our LG will be bringing home made soup over for supper on Saturday. That will be a help also.

And now the surgery is done... Apparently you are home now...?

That, and did so much travel last year, planning a major trip
next year, will be good to have a quiet one between.
    True...
Who knows--might even plant a garden? We'll see on that one.
If your knee and Steve's hand are up to the work.... :)
Don't know what he thinks of the idea--have to see how our other
    plans work out.
Haven't mentioned it to him yet, eh....?

No, and we probably won't do it after all. Nice thought, but the work involved is not really what should be undertaken this year.

I was rather wondering about that.... gardens are (or at least can be) a
    lot of work.... :)

Always something that you've "gotta do" before other things can
    be done. (G)
Exactly.... and sometimes things you'd not been considering at
    first..... ;)
Yes, a year ago the knee problems hadn't even begun.
    For instance.... :)
Had no idea, even when we started the trip out west that I'd
develop the problems. It wasn't until we were about 2/3 thru it
    that the knee started hurting.
Not a pleasant surprise at all....

No, it wasn't. Only about 10 days before we got home, so glad it
didn't start nearer to the beginning of the trip. I gave it a week's
rest when we got home and called the doctor when it didn't improve.
After his x-rays, we knew it was something major.

And now you've had the replacement....

comparing. Maybe later this year, after the new Wegman's opens
    up in Raleigh?
They generally show up in the stores with the rest of the
Christmas stuff, like November, maybe late October....
OK, so we might be able to get one at the Raleigh store.
    Good possibility, come fall.... :)
Maybe next year at the WF Wegman's.
That is also a possibility... :)

Still waiting for the signs to go up announcing exactly where it will
    be. (G)

    Patience.... (G)

I make mostly bread, but Steve will do biscuits, waffles,
pancakes, etc. We still use a good amount of flour, less sugar
    and other stuff.
Yup... and you still are doing more baking than I... :) Maybe
at some point, I'll get back into it... but don't really
    know...
Maybe you will, maybe you won't. I'm still doing a lot of what I
used to do in some areas, have shifted focus in others.
    Exactly...
Still doing a lot of sewing but more quilts and suchlike than
the clothing that was just about all of it at one time.
Definitely a shift in focus there.... :)
Yes, but still doing some clothing--mostly shirts for me.
    And the Santa suits....?

    Mostly shirts for him lately.

So similar to making the shirts for yourself....

I e-mailed her; she said with rest the knee has improved so she's not
going to try to see a doctor now. If it gets worse, she now knows who
    she will call.

And now the surgery is done... Apparently you are home now...?

They aren't so great in parking lots. We stopped at W-M after an
appointment, parked right by a cart return so grabbed one from the
stall. Walked up to the door, only to find it was closed and had to use
another one. I was just too worn out to do so; Steve brought up the
    truck and took me home.

Got several meals from church family, and a quilting friend
brought over Olive Garden soup, salad and bread sticks
    yesterday. Sweet surprise, that one.
Hadn't expected anything from her...? ;) I remember when I

What happened... burnt crust...? Or sloppy cheese over everything...?

Bottom crust was pure charcoal. Steve said that he'll close the vents as
soon as he slides the next one on. He just took a couple of pastramis
off the smoker to sit in the oven for an hour--first time making those
    with the new smoker/grill.

year. We may head down to FL once the knee gets to the point

    You are learning... (G)

It's hard sitting and not doing, but I can do more than I could a couple
of weeks ago. The cane is much easier to get around and do things with
than the walker was. Still, looking forward to when I can ditch that
    also.

I know, but at least we'll be able to shop the Raleigh store

Shouldn't take too long to get in. I called on a Monday for my
knee, got an appointment for that Wed. I'll e-mail her in a
few days, find out how she's doing.
    That does sound promising.... :)
Hopefully she will have the same fast time between call and
    appointment.
    Indeed. :)

I e-mailed her; she said with rest the knee has improved so she's not going to try to see a doctor now. If it gets worse, she now knows who
    she will call.

Guess she's not ready for it yet.... the time will probably come for her
    as for others.... :)

Good progress, though... :) I've kept our church informed, and
    prayers continue... :)
And very much appreciated. We've not made it out to a Wednesday
night (prayer service) since just before my surgery. This upcoming
Sunday will be the first time for Sunday School and church, but
most likely, not LG. We also made a trip into Raleigh today; I
used either the "ride 'em" carts or just the shopping cart,
depending on where we were/how much we needed to get.
Progress, anyway... :) Those ride-em cars are a good thing for
times like this... :) And shopping carts make great walkers,
    too... ;)

They aren't so great in parking lots. We stopped at W-M after an appointment, parked right by a cart return so grabbed one from the
stall. Walked up to the door, only to find it was closed and had to
use another one. I was just too worn out to do so; Steve brought up the truck and took me home.

W-M is probably way too big a store for you to be walking at this point, anyway.... along with its parking lot.... :) And they don't usually
leave the ride-em carts out in the cart returns for you.... :)

Hadn't expected that from her, but not surprised. Steve is
still doing the cooking; I'm doing some of the clean up now. He
tried out a pizza on the new grill last night and found out
that the concept needs some tweaking still. (G)
What happened...burnt crust...? Or sloppy cheese over everything...?

Bottom crust was pure charcoal. Steve said that he'll close the vents
as soon as he slides the next one on.

    Trial and error... ;)

He just took a couple of pastramis off the smoker to sit in the oven
for an hour--first time making those with the new smoker/grill.

He is indeed busy playing with the new smoker/grill.... :)

year. We may head down to FL once the knee gets to the point
where I can take the ride. Steve's parents will be moving to an
assisted living place some time this spring; we'd like to help
    as much as we can.
That's probably a wise move for them... they have the place
picked out and all, then...? Do be careful not to overdo,
    though....
Don't know if they have the place picked out but most likely
working on it. And no, I won't over do; I've learned to respect
my limits, even tho it's hard to sit still sometimes. (G)
    You are learning... (G)

It's hard sitting and not doing, but I can do more than I could a
couple of weeks ago. The cane is much easier to get around and do
things with than the walker was. Still, looking forward to when I can ditch that also.

    Don't be too hasty.... :)

I know, but at least we'll be able to shop the Raleigh store
    in a few more months.

We tried that yesterday, only to find no carts at that entrance. Hung on
to a buggy to walk down to the other entrance, only to find no carts
there. Used the buggy for support for the bit of shopping we did, then
Steve picked me up at the door.

Since I was early for therapy today, we stopped at the doctor's office
so he could check on the knee--a bit of a problem in the one area. He
treated it, said to come back for a dressing change on Friday, see him

Easily remedied by getting rid of that smoker. (G) I tried making supper
last night--didn't turn down the heat quite far enough so the bottom
layer of meat/onions/mushrooms burned on to the pan. Steve rescued the
rest (Mexican seasoned, thickened with yogurt and flour) and served over noodles for a Mexican stroganoff. Overally worthy of doing again but
making sure I turn down the heat more.

    (G)

Easily remedied by getting rid of that smoker. (G) I tried making
supper last night--didn't turn down the heat quite far enough so the bottom layer of meat/onions/mushrooms burned on to the pan. Steve
rescued the rest (Mexican seasoned, thickened with yogurt and flour)
and served over noodles for a Mexican stroganoff. Overally worthy of
doing again but making sure I turn down the heat more.

Need to get your touch back... (G) Nice rescue there... ;)

It was what I'd started to make. Since then, I've done some puttering in
the kitchen (he had me thin slice onions yesterday) but not much more in
the cooking line. It's still hard to stand for more than a few minutes.

He just took a couple of pastramis off the smoker to sit in the
oven for an hour--first time making those with the new
    smoker/grill.
He is indeed busy playing with the new smoker/grill.... :)
Very much so, as long as the weather co-operates.
And has it been, by and large...? ;)

Except for turning cool for a few days, yes. It should warm up again
by the end of the week.

I'd think that cool shouldn't be much of an issue, at least not as
much as precipitation (whether wet or fluffy).... :) SOW, the
    neighbors
fired up their grills recently... and not on one of the really warm
    days, either... ;)

We couldn't today--it's been cold and wet. There was a bit of snow in
the state, not too far west of us, but it didn't stick around. Temps
didn't even get out of the 40s--record set for lowest high on this day.
But, by this week end it'll be grilling temps/weather again.

The article didn't mention all the stores in the middle... it
might be interesting to find out where some of the other fairly

She has a torn meniscus--a simpler job than the total knee but
still, better done sooner rather than later.
Yeah, that doesn't generally heal on its own.... Did she go to
the doctor and have it assessed, then....?
She had it looked at by another doctor several months ago who
just said to let time heal it. She wasn't happy with that option
at the time so was interested to have a 2nd opinion, now is just
    letting it rest.
And if time AND rest don't heal it, she might go for the surgery...?

I would think/hope so. It seems strange, not seeing her at the
    farmer's market.

I'm sure it does... being a fixture and all that, and one you normally
stop to talk to.... Hopefully she does get it taken care of it sooner
    than later... :)

Since I was early for therapy today, we stopped at the doctor's
office so he could check on the knee--a bit of a problem in the
one area. He treated it, said to come back for a dressing change
on Friday, see him next week. In the mean time, no therapy that
would bend the knee so had to cancel at least a couple of sessions.
Did that mean that you were able to get to a quilting session or
    two...?

We stopped in for a bit after finishing with the doctor, but to visit,
not do any sewing. Have to see what the outcome of today's appointment
is as to when I can resume therapy or go to quilting.

I wonder if she'd be able to modify the routine enough to be able to
sit enough to not stress the knee too much...

Don't know, but getting it fixed is the better option overall. IIRC,
instead of a big commercial oven, she has several standard kitchen
stoves in her garage for baking. That's a lot of stress on the knee,
bending and reaching, to use them.

therapy) but can do the quadricepts strengthening ones at home.
I'll go back again this coming Tuesday for another check.
How did things go at today's appointment...?

Still an open area so we're trying medical grade honey (Leptospermum honey) this week. I do have the OK to resume some therapy but no
intense knee bending exercises; the honey is covered with the same gauze/ace bandage dressing so it will stay where it's needed.

Is that working...? Good that you can resume some therapy... :)

Saw the doctor Tuesday--the honey is working but he said it might take
some months to fully heal. He reduced the dressing to just a cover over
the affected area--making therapy yesterday a lot easier in that respect
but I got quite the work out otherwise. Doctor also wants me to continue
with therapy (at least) until the end of May, at which time we'll
    re-evaluate and make a decision.

I'm doing a bit more, but still prefer to let Steve do things
that RH>> will take a while to prepare. I can get things out of the pantry
or fridge, load the dishwasher or put away what he's finished
with--jobs like that I can take breaks as needed. (G)
So much safer jobs for you at this time... :) Eventually you'll
be back to your normal... and in the meantime it's good that
Steve can handle things capably.... :)

He's been a major help as I can't do it all on my own yet. I'll
probably cut up some onions and potatoes for a German potato salad
after I finish Fido, have him assemble it later this afternoon. I
pulled some ribs out of the freezer to go with the potato salad for supper.

Sounds like a nice division of labor... :) And I'm sure it came out
    quite tasty... :)

It did. He warmed up the ribs in a large pot of water, using the sous
vide. They got warm but not toughened from overheating.

    (or smoker) at times.
I don't think the day(s) they were grilling were wet, just still
    pretty chilly... ;)

I'd rather be chilly and dry than warm and soaking wet.

Probably their take on it, too... :)

    Makes most sense. (G)

Steve e-filed--we've been doing that for quite a while now.
We've semi-considered it a few times, but always decide to just
stay NB>> with paper... Richard still has any federal refunds sent to
him by NB>> check, I get the state refunds and I've started letting
them direct NB>> deposit them.... Still rather Luddite-ish... ;)

We started while Steve was still active duty--a lot more convenient
    for us.

I can see how that would be... :)

    Exactly!

Saw her at the market today (She was shopping, as we were, not
vending.) and got a report that it's doing much better, now that
she's not on her feet as much. But, if it flares up again, she
    will know where to go.
If she's there vending, does she have to be on her feet a lot,
or can she do it mostly sitting, with the leg up...?
She was one of the bakers so on her feet a lot before the market
(making the goodies) and during the market (selling the goodies).
Not really a sit down-able set up when she was active with
customers but would have been able to sit in the off times.
I wonder if she'd be able to modify the routine enough to be able
to sit enough to not stress the knee too much...

Don't know, but getting it fixed is the better option overall.

I'd agree... just trying to think of interim measures...

That's why I'm glad I had my surgery in mid February instead of late

way yet but will get there, with more practice. On my feet a bit more
in the kitchen too--not much, but every bit helps.

Yup, that's the way to do it.... :)

Decided next time to make it less sweet.
Was this a recipe you'd made before, or a new one...? Perhaps
your sweet tooth is abating some...? ;)
Used one from "More With Less" that I'd never tried before. We
decided it needed about half the pineapple, sub in another
veggie for the other half of the pineapple (carrots or broccoli)
and cut the sugar, maybe by half.
That does sound like your sweet tooth is abating.... (G) Or at
least, that you should have reduced the sugary parts of it to
    begin with... ;)

    Probably the latter. (G)

Did you notate it in the cookbook....? Or wasn't it one that you'd
    likely make again anyway....?

    Hi Nancy,

late March. Considering how much the knee has had to be wrapped
up, if the surgery were later in the spring, the knee would be
rather hot under the wrappings. Right now it has a square
bandage, about 3" x 3" covering just a portion of the top.
Undoubtedly more comfortable than it might have been... :)

Yes, very much so. I have had casts in the summer months while we were
in TX and AZ, not my idea of fun. No cast would be used with the knee surgery but wrappings would be just as miserable.

    They would indeed.... :)

I'm down to just a bandage, about 1 1/2" x 3" on the knee now.

And we can't exactly plan out her life for her, either... ;)
No, but was able to give her the name of a doctor to see.
And I'm sure that was helpful... :)

Yes, since she wasn't happy with the original doctor.

Yup, that will make things easier for her, to have a good doctor... :)

Still a case of making haste slowly... Better to be careful,
and have the knee heal properly, though, than to rush along
    and NB>>>> not... :)
Just came back from the doctor. He's happy with the progress,
says that the danger of infection is over and I can use the one
passive quads exerciser. Back in 2 weeks, not one.
    Good progress... :)
Except that even the small cover for the passive machine is on
the big side for me. I'm doing active quads exercising instead.
As long as you are progressing... ;)

Slowly, but steadily. I'm not comfortable going down steps the "right"
way yet but will get there, with more practice. On my feet a bit more
in the kitchen too--not much, but every bit helps.

Yup, that's the way to do it.... :)

Had my 2 weeks check up on Wed--he said 4 to 6 weeks for the next one.
Still working on trying to go down steps better; once I've gone down 3
or 4, it gets easier but the first couple are hard. Also still working
    on strengthening everything else.

decided it needed about half the pineapple, sub in another

I'll make a version of it but remember when I see it to cut the
pineapple and sugar levels if I use that particular recipe for
    reference.

I know--before she got too bad, Dad had Mom use a buggy as a walker when

even that, he'd have her sit on a bench in the front part of the store
    while he shopped.

We did burgers, chips, beans, spinach salad and ice "cream" fruit
bars for the meal--all the cooking at church was done on the gas
grill. Kitchen was torn up to redo the flooring so we couldn't
cook in it, had planned this meal before we knew we couldn't use
    the kitchen.

Sounds like it worked out ok... :)

It did, and by the time we cook again, things will be back to normal.

OTOH, we found (and Steve installed) a Kohler faucet for the
kitchen sink half off at a yard sale. We paid a grand total of
$5. for it. Deal of the day! (G)

Was that for the church kitchen or for yours....? Indeed a good
    deal.... :)

For the church. We have a similar, but not Kohler branded model at the
house. Same with the camper--we know how well they work so had been
looking for one for the church, and not wanting to spend a fortune.

Hopefully the hole will all be filled in in another week or
    so.
That would be a relief... :)
Very much so, in more ways than one.
    And has it now...?
    Not quite, but almost.
Taking its sweet time, I see.... ;)
About what the therapist said today. But, the ortho dr said
    that it would take time.
    True. :)

I'm not concerned; it's past the major infection danger now.

    That's a good thing.... and a major milestone... :)

Progress... and good to be still prepared for the occasional
not quite steady or the uneven path....
Yes, but I left it at home yesterday (out for therapy) and today
(church & quilting). Progress is being made.
    Sounds like. :)
I'm leaving it home more now. Did use a shopping cart for support,
both when we shopped for LG and today, at Target.
Shopping carts make good walkers... ;)

Wegmans has a few carts with an adult seat that a caregiver can push
through the store, with a good-sized cart area for the groceries.... Our
store has at least one of them, anyway....

That, and more so, the 5 gallon coolers we use for VBS and
    other RH>>> church wide events.
    Even better... :)
It was a big help washing up dishes after the VBS cook out--I
    had RH>> that "fun".
Someone has to do it... ;)

Yes, and I was that "someone". Did have a newer member help by drying
so I got to know her a bit better.

That worked out nicely on a couple of different levels, then... :)

    Quite so!

Got our annual early July cook out coming up in a couple of
    weeks.
    Is that on a Sunday....?
Yes, right after church, a tradition for the Sunday closest to
    July 4.
So you've had it... did it all go well...?

All the dogs were cooked, a good number eaten, and then the skies
opened up. Some of the younger folks stayed outside, playing volleyball
in the rain for a bit and came in quite soaked. We'd overbought on the watermelon so yesterday we took one (from the 3 we bought) home with
us, gave half to a neighbor.

Sounds like it did go nicely enough, and a good time had by all, one
    way or another... :)

Yes, and there was enough ice cream left over (put into the freezer)
that we were able to use some of the vanilla on the blueberry cobbler I
made for our LG the next week. Next big event is the hymn sing and ice
cream social at the end of August.

    Hi Nancy,

Seems that way at times. I think this will be a relatively quiet
    week tho.
And was it...? ;) Ours got a bit busy... :)

I shut down from Wednesday night thru yesterday--didn't do much except
for treating a head cold. It's somewhat improved--made it to church today--but a bit of it has gone into the chest.

Oh, dear... just what you didn't need.... Hope it's clearing by
    now....

It turned into crud, got some antibiotics on Wed. and am beginning to
feel a bit better. Second part of last week, first of this week were a
    total wash out tho.

I remember y'all doing that... And as long as there are people
at church that do need the extra effort to be included, it
makes NB>>> sense to take that effort... :) Besides, it's quite
tasty... ;) RH>> We brought back an empty bowl and lots of favorable comments.
No surprise there... ;) Were there any other interesting
offerings at the ice cream social...?

Nothing in particular..............more store bought ice creams than
    home made this year.

Oh, well... guess people have had busy times lately... :)

Yes, some getting ready for school starting the next day, others in
school, summer winding down, etc. Still, fun to try different ice creams
    and toppings. (G)

A long day but sometimes those are unavoidable.
It was indeed a long day, and also indeed unavoidable... but
    done with now.... :)
We've got some long driving ahead of us at the end of this
month/beginning of next month. Going to visit Steve's parents,
taking the camper which means a longer time on the road as we
can't go above 60 on the interstates. We usually stop around
Savannah; it's a good half way point.
Are you going for Thanksgiving...? or leaving right after....?

Going for the holiday, towing the camper and planning to not be on the road during peak travel times.

Sounds wise... :) I'm sure they'll be glad to have you there for the holiday.... ;)

    Hi Nancy,

I'm glad Steve "converted", remember he was hesitant about it at
    one point?
Fu is good at reassuring the hesitant... ;) And the futomaki
roll went a long way to convince Steve.... :)
That, plus you and Richard being familiar enough with the various
things to give him several points to consider jumping off from.

True... :) We could explain what things were, and give glowing recommendations for especially good things... ;)

That was probably what made the difference. He knew what was what that
way. No big hype like the durian tho. (G)

This time it was plain and simply tired... Hadn't even had any
nibbles along the way.... we'd had something to eat maybe around
noon, as part of the closing things up.... but for whatever
reason, just hadn't even had nibbles...

But, you survived until a late supper time. We probably would have
stopped a few hours earlier and had something for supper, then pushed
    on to home.

Yup, we survived... part of what kept us going was knowing that there
was good food waiting for us at the end of the trip... (G)

    Worth the wait.

For sure! We'll do some things in the camper, bring them over, but Mom
wants to do a turkey. She's got the oven for it, the rest of the kitchen
is quite cramped for space tho.

Now I have to think of what nibbles (and other food stuffs) to load into
