• Lowe's (was Amazon)

Lowe's (building materials and hardware) is sliding toward being
bundled w/Wally World in my bad-boys list. For many of the same
    reasons.

    And what are those reasons?

Without getting into the political aspects of their behaviour the
reasons have mostly to do with their treatment and exploitation of
    their work
force. Fortunately, as with Wally World - there are choices available.

One thing that I have appreciated about Lowe's is that they do have a
military discount (10%) for Veterans. By tying it to the MyLowe's card,
I don't have to show the military ID plus I can get the discount for
online purchases. Home Depot is not as cooperative. While I can show my military ID in the store and get a 10% discount, I can't do so for
online purchases. We also have a Town & Country Hardware which sometimes
has things the two others don't. If none of them have what I need, I
will go online to purchase, not always from Amazon.

It is getting almost to the time of year when fresh strawberries will be available. This will be good then.

Fair enough. Your money, your choice. I find that I get service with a
smile at Menard's, RP Lumber, Ace Hardware and Noonan's Hardware. Nearly
every time I have visited Lowe's the service has been bordering on surly.

I work in retail - and I promise you a smile and a good attitude brings
    in repeat business.

BTW - AutoZone (shameless plug) offers a 10% discount for active or
retired military, uniformed public safety (fire and cops) personnel,
etc. We get a lot of Guard folks come in in their fatigues, or even in
regular uniform - for the most part the 10% is automatic with all our
check-out people. Also if the customer is in civvies but we remember
    from previous visits.

It is getting almost to the time of year when fresh strawberries will
be available. This will be good then.

For you, maybe. For me - still a couple months out.

The traditional time for these has just passed - but they're good at
    any time. Bv)=

    Title: Chocolate Covered Strawberries
    Categories: Five, Fruits, Chocolate
    Yield: 12 servings

    1 pt Fresh strawberries
8 oz Pkg chocolate bark; or more

Wash and drain strawberries. Pat dry with paper towel.
Leave stems intact. Place half of the chocolate in a
microwave safe bowl. Microwave on high until melted
(appx 2 min). Holding berries by the stem, dip one at a
time into the chocolate. Gently shake excess and place
on waxed paper until firm. If chocolate becomes too
thick reheat for a few seconds.

CHOCOLATE BASKET: cover a dish of desired shape (pie
pan) with foil and spray lightly with Pam. Place melted
chocolate in a ziploc bag and seal. Snip a small hole in
the corner and drizzle the chocolate to create a basket.

Chill until firm. Carefully remove the basket. Place on
a serving tray and fill with chocolate covered
    strawberries.

None of those businesses are near me. Things must be different here in
NC. I don't get the surly attitude here. People have been very helpful,
much like you describe with the other businesses.

I work in retail - and I promise you a smile and a good attitude

For sure! We are changing which Walgreens pharmacy we go to because of
the level of service we have received at the one we had been using. I
wish CVS had not lost the Express Scripts contract. We had a
long-standing relationship with them mainly because of their service and attitude.

You had mentioned that before and I have taken advantage of it. I
usually have to ask though even when I have my Army Retired hat on.

I think they are in season now in Florida. NC is a few months out yet
    also.

We saw some on display in the store. There were too many with white
shoulders for me to more than take a look and pass them by. I'd rather
make my own with really good berries.

I think strawberries would be good in this also:

Lowe's (building materials and hardware) is sliding toward being
bundled w/Wally World in my bad-boys list.

Lowe's is not doing well in Canada. They just closed 30 of their 600
stores. Canada has two big players in the industry. The first and
still #1 is Home Hardware which is a co-operative of 1100 stores and
individual owners. They expanded from just being in hardware to
lumber yards and building supplies by taking over Beaver Lumber
which was also the largest company in its niche. The only other
company of consequence was Quebec based Rona. Lowe's got into
Canada by buying Rona and taking it national, (just as Wal-Mart
entered Canada by buying Woolworth's) but most Canadian consumers
would prefer to buy at a co-op than a subsidiary of a multi-
    national.

Title: Egg Soup With Ginger - Eiersoep Met Gember
    Categories: Dutch, Soups, Eggs, Spice
    Servings: 4

    1 qt clear vegetable broth
    2 TB thin soy sauce
    6 thin slices fresh ginger
    root
    1 1/2 TB cornstarch
    3 eggs, lightly beaten
1 1/2 oz fresh leek, thinly sliced
    salt
    1 pn sugar

Bring the broth (you can make it from tablets) to a boil and add the
soy sauce. Put in the sliced ginger and simmer just short of boiling
for 6 minutes. Take the ginger slices out of the broth and chop or
cut them in very small pieces.

Prepare the cornstarch with 4 tbsp. cold water. Mix it in the broth
    and simmer for 3 minutes.

Beat the eggs with a whisk and pour gently, while stirring and
whisking, into the boiling broth. Turn down the heat at once, add
the leek rings and the ginger.

Simmer just below boiling point for another four minutes and add
    salt and sugar to taste.
