From MICHAEL LOO@1:123/140 to NANCY BACKUS on Sunday, January 20, 2019 22:17:56
The stem adds to the price mostly because
it's harder to transport the vegetable with
them. Some people like the splashy
    presentations that these can provide.
That seemed to be one possibility to us... but wouldn't fly for us... :)

I could imagine waiters parading through the
dining room with these long-stemmed things
as if they were a suckling pig or similar.

Others actually like to eat them, which up
to doubles the food value depending on the
length that is left on (the taste is sort of
like the heart but a tad bitterer; the
texture is a little more fibrous).
We wondered about that... these stems were a good foot or more, maybe 15 inches... at that price, we hoped they were edible... (G)

There are a lot of doofy things that people will
pay extra for ... carrot tops and such. Of course,
carrot tops are perfectly edible (they go well in
stock), though they are strong and unless very
well cooked or disguised numb your tongue.

Half price was probably a buck off back in
    those days [g,d,r].
Funny, ha ha... ;) I'm not THAT much older than you... (G) Probably 2
    or 3 bucks apiece....
    Still too much. [grump]
And there were two, sometimes three (when we took the kid), of us,
    too... :)

Placating your kid - priceless (to
    paraphrase an old AmEx ad).

Another story at the expense of Mme. would-be
    sophisticate.
She really did pick the wrong set to try to impress... ;)

I was amused when some guy at a bar we were
visiting during a layover tried to mansplain
economics to my friend the Dodger ... who has a
Nobel in economics. He just sort of grinned and
didn't say much; I have many friends who are almost
as eminent (Helen among them) but who don't have the
supreme self-confidence to ignore that sort of thing.
Then there are the ones (mostly acquaintances rather
than friends) who spend their lives being important,
    like this one.

Others among us have had something to do with
    running movie houses ...
theatre downtown (the Little)... She took me to a number of movies that she was interested in and wanted company... :) When they were running
the neighborhood one, she had me come work the ticket sales for the
but not that kind of movies.
She liked Fellini films and such....

Fellini? There are boobs in his movies!

midnight shows, and occasionally when she knew there would likely be a
Someday I'll have to see the Rocky Horror
    Picture Show.
By the time she'd retired and all, the participation part had become
very raunchy.... before, it was pretty good-natured, and I rather
enjoyed it when it was at the Coronet...

    I've heard about the raunch.

good turnout for the evening ones... She knew the take would be
accurate, and I got to see movies for free.... oh, and help with the cleanup after, too... (G)
Someday I'll have to clean up after the
    Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Now, THAT IS an experience... ;)

And probably something not to be done until
your shots are up to date.

Made up for the cajeta being made with
half-fat milk by whipping some heavy cream
with Courvoisier to go with it.
    That sounds tasty enough... (G)

Heavy cream = good. Courvoisier = good.

Most of the time I don't hate myself unless
I've done major dirt by someone, but that
hasn't happened in a bunch of years.
We tend to avoid that sort of thing....

Sometimes one puts one's foot in it amd then
it turns out that the only thing to be done is
to put one's other foot in it.

I'd guess that some things are more advantageous (or valued) free than others... I suppose that the transit system might have other issues as well... I could see ridership declining because of increased vandalism, for instance... and the vandalism happening because of decreased supervision, without having the money takers there on the spot... Here, the bus company offers free rides for certain occasions....
Thing is that one could have a visible presence
while taking away the gates and the accounting
systems and probably still save money.
    Ok, I can see that...

Running public utilities is a headache.

    Easy Cajeta (Mexican Caramel)
said, that is okay (there really is nothing
magic about goat milk). I made a triple
recipe of it - making cajeta crepes for
    dinner last night.
And were they well received...? :)

The first batch was fabulous. The second batch
I put too much flour in, so I gave Bonnie the
first ones and myself the ones where the batter
had thickened and become disgusting. The third
batch I haven't heard about - she was planning
on making something for her buddy's birthday,
so I taught her how. It's pretty simple, you
mix equal quantities of egg and milk and then
beat in flour until the batter is the texture
of heavy cream. Then you use your best nonstick
pan to make the crepes with. It's not genius
material but always makes people impressed and
happy (you took all this trouble for me?)

Probably makes for a more copesetic existence to just ignore such

Maybe nowadays... Back then, even the debris afterwards was all pretty
clean, just like the audience participation...

Probably stones or such to hold the pastry flat while it does the first
partial bake..... but I also note that the instructions above that are
missing vital endings of the steps.... so the whole thing is flawed...
